Job summary

Commonwealth of Massachusetts is seeking a part-time Lab Technician / Programming Support at Webster Office to procure urine specimens and Breathalyzer samples, test and preserve them, and maintain testing equipment. You will report results, maintain records, testify in court when required, and collaborate with CCC staff, Probation Officers, and DRC personnel to ensure accurate reporting.

Qualifications include an Associate's Degree in criminal justice and strong communication, with proficiency

Description

  • To procure urine specimens and Breathalyzer samples from inmates.
  • To test, track, and preserve urine specimens in accordance with prescribed policies and procedures.
  • To maintain, calibrate and operate state-of-the-art drug testing equipment.
  • To accurately report both urine specimens and Breathalyzer sample test results.
  • To maintain accurate and reliable drug and alcohol testing records.
  • To testify in court on the accuracy of drug and alcohol tests, the procedures followed to obtain urine and Breathalyzer samples and the reliability of the equipment, or other duties as may be required.
  • To maintain and secure equipment for drug and alcohol tests.
  • To maintain and monitor the security and integrity of the drug testing equipment, reagents and other chemicals used in performing such tests.
  • To train and monitor assigned staff person and/or student interns to assist with drug and alcohol testing and maintain a drug and alcohol testing database.
  • To keep current on developments in the field of drug and alcohol testing.
  • To collect relevant data on CCC drug and alcohol tests and prepare reports on a regular basis.
  • To work with CCC staff and Probation Officers to ensure a positive flow of information for requesting and performing and reporting on, drug and alcohol tests.
  • To attend all scheduled meetings and present accurate accounts and information of CCC drug and alcohol testing at said meeting.
  • To complete all documents during the shift, including but not limited to, log entries and special reports.
  • To work closely with the Day Reporting Center’s (DRC’s) staff in procuring, testing, tracking and preserving urine specimens from DRC participants.
  • To support the programming staff with scheduling and any other auxiliary tasks to support the goals of the center.
  • To maintain confidentiality of personal data.
  • To perform any duties and tasks assigned by supervisors, and related work as required.
Qualifications

A. Education and Experience:

Associate’s Degree in criminal justice, counseling, human services, psychology or social work from an accredited program.

B. Knowledge, Ability, and Skill

  • The ability to test, track and preserve urine specimens in accordance with prescribed policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the requisite policies and procedures associated with the collection of urine specimens and drug testing.
  • The ability to communicate intelligently with people in a direct, clear and professional manner.
  • The ability to maintain, calibrate and operate state-of-the-art drug testing equipment.
  • General knowledge about the purpose of a community safety facility; understanding of the goals and objectives of a community correction program and a general familiarity with the court systems.
  • Ability to deal respectfully and professionally with a difficult population required.
  • Proven verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience working with a diverse offender population.
  • Ability to work varying hours and shifts.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and Access software systems.

C. Physical Qualifications

  • Some physical effort demanded when performing testing functions under typical office conditions in a correctional setting.
  • Frequently required to sit, stand, talk and hear.
