Job description

Lab Technician / Lab Analyst

$26 - $30 per hour | Houston, TX | On-site | Consulting

Contract to Permanent
A bit about us:

We are an industrial technology company specialising in separation and filtration solutions for industries including oil & gas, petrochemical, chemical processing, and other industrial operations.

We are looking for a temporary to permanent Lab Technician to support our in‑house analytical testing capabilities by investigating contaminants, particles, filter media, and separation‑performance issues. This is not solely an instrument‑operation role. The successful candidate must be able to interpret analytical results, develop technically sound hypotheses, pursue logical lines of investigative reasoning, determine appropriate next steps, and communicate findings clearly in written technical reports.

The role requires a practical foundation in chemistry and analytical science, strong problem‑solving ability, attention to detail, and the ability to connect laboratory findings to real‑world industrial process and filtration problems.

Why join us?

This is a great opportunity for someone looking to build hands‑on laboratory experience in an industrial environment. You’ll work alongside engineers and technical specialists and gain exposure to microscopy, spectroscopy, particle analysis, filtration testing, and materials characterization.

You’ll also get to see how laboratory results are applied to real‑world problems rather than simply running repetitive tests.

Job Details
Key Responsibilities
Analytical Investigation & Laboratory Testing
  • Conduct testing to identify particle size, physical characteristics, and chemical composition of contaminants in support of root‑cause investigations.
  • Interpret analytical results and integrate findings from multiple testing methods rather than simply recording instrument output.
  • Develop hypotheses regarding contaminant identity, source, process conditions, filter performance, or other potential causes of observed results.
  • Pursue logical lines of investigative reasoning by identifying additional testing, comparisons, or data needed to confirm or rule out hypotheses.
  • Perform microscopy and spectroscopy analyses, including SEM and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), as applicable.
  • Evaluate filter porosity, media integrity, and chemical composition of new and used filters to support optimization of filter performance.
  • Support collaboration with third‑party laboratories for filter‑efficiency and separation‑performance testing.
Technical Writing & Reporting
  • Prepare clear, detailed technical reports that explain test methods, analytical results, interpretation, conclusions, and recommended next steps.
  • Translate complex laboratory findings into practical, defensible conclusions that can be used by engineers, product specialists, field personnel, and customers.
  • Document investigative reasoning, including the evidence supporting or challenging potential root‑cause hypotheses.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records, sample tracking, calculations, supporting data, and testing documentation.
Technical Support & Collaboration
  • Work with field service technicians, applications engineers, and product specialists to understand the process conditions and customer problems surrounding submitted samples.
  • Assist engineering teams with data collection needed for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) validation and advanced technical‑service projects.
  • Contribute laboratory insights to customer troubleshooting, contamination investigations, and filtration/separation recommendations.
Equipment Operation & Laboratory Quality
  • Operate, calibrate, troubleshoot, and maintain laboratory equipment in accordance with safety and quality requirements.
  • Follow established laboratory procedures while recognizing when results warrant further investigation or additional testing.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, safe, and well‑functioning laboratory environment.
Qualifications
Core Requirements
  • Demonstrated chemistry knowledge and experience applying chemical principles to analytical laboratory work.
  • Experience interpreting analytical results, identifying patterns or anomalies, developing hypotheses, and determining appropriate investigative next steps.
  • Technical writing experience, including responsibility for documenting analytical findings, interpretations, conclusions, investigation summaries, and/or recommendations.
  • Hands‑on analytical laboratory experience using one or more relevant techniques such as microscopy, spectroscopy, chromatography, elemental analysis, particle analysis, materials characterization, or chemical analysis.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, documentation, and problem‑solving skills.
Highly Preferred
  • Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Technology, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, or a closely related scientific discipline.
  • Hands‑on SEM and EDS/EDX experience.
  • Experience with particle characterization, contaminant identification, materials analysis, filter‑media testing, porosity, or filtration/separation performance.
  • Background in oil & gas, petrochemical, chemical processing, industrial manufacturing, or industrial contamination analysis.
  • Experience investigating unknown or unexpected analytical results and communicating the scientific reasoning behind conclusions.
