Laboratory Technician Assistant (clinical lab assistant/phlebotomist)
Part-Time, 32hrs/week, Nights 11p-7a, every other weekend and every other holidays required.
Job Summary
Performs, under minimal supervision, daily workflow management of the section. Responsible for training and competency assessments of new LTAs and phlebotomy students, and makes recommendations on skill assessments. Collaborates to monitor phlebotomy status reports to ensure timely services. May perform duties of LTA, Phlebotomist, and/or CLA as needed for patient care, and finds coverage when necessary.
Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Phlebotomy and lab experience required
- Graduation from a Phlebotomy Training program preferred
Minimum Skills and Abilities
- Committed to ongoing skill development through resources like in-services and educational programs
- Participates in staff meetings and reviews documentation as required
- Assists in onboarding and mentoring new staff
- Performs analytical and decision-making tasks with minimal supervision
- Recognizes when to seek assistance or consultation
- Understands hospital and departmental policies, including safety protocols
- Awareness of hospital programs and services
Certification/Licensure
- Phlebotomy Certification preferred; ASCP certification or eligibility within a year
Job Responsibilities
- Training of new LTAs and students, maintaining competency checklists
- Coordinates and monitors activities of LTAs on assigned shifts
- Distributes work and liaises between Laboratory and other departments
- Demonstrates advanced skills in specimen collection and computer troubleshooting
- Directs specimens to appropriate departments
- Handles procedures and reports related to LIS devices proficiently
- Reviews specimen status reports regularly to ensure timely testing
- Performs all duties of an LTA proficiently
- Performs other lab assistant duties as directed
- Achieves a 95% success rate in venipunctures across inpatient and outpatient populations
- Follows safety protocols and PPE usage
- Adheres to departmental policies and quality improvement practices
- Receives and verifies specimens from couriers
- Manages specimen labeling and test selection to minimize repeats
- Communicates effectively via telephone
- Performs troubleshooting of pneumatic tube systems
- Processes specimens (centrifugation, aliquoting, labeling)
- Prepares specimens for referral laboratories with accurate documentation
- Maintains inventory and orderly storage of supplies and equipment
- Records processes accurately using manual and electronic systems
- Follows all safety, infection control, and hazardous material policies
- Participates in annual safety training and compliance activities
- Respects diversity and promotes a professional, tolerant environment
