Lab Tech-Medical Science II

Department: VetMed-Small Animal Med & Surg

Position Summary

This role supports veterinary research projects involving animal models, both laboratory and clinical. Responsibilities include animal care, data collection, and light laboratory work, while collaborating with a team of departmental technicians and faculty researchers.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent and 2 years of related experience
Preferred Qualifications
  • Licensed Veterinary Technician with hands‑on animal experience in a clinical or research setting

  • Read and understand research project protocols
  • Strong organizational skills, detailed‑oriented and accurate
  • Ability or willingness to learn handling and restraint of multiple species of animals
  • Effective communication skills
  • Critical thinking while carrying out instructions
  • Maintain confidentiality and provide consultation to stakeholders
  • Positive attitude and calm demeanor in stressful situations

  • Basic computer knowledge in MS Word and Excel
Physical Demands
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Sit, stand, stoop, bend, and walk intermittently on hard floor surfaces
  • Work with small, delicate pieces of equipment or large heavy objects/containers/machinery
  • Wear required protective gear (e.g., facemask, gloves, gown, hairnet, safety goggles)
  • Work for long periods with arms extended
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Project Management (40%)
    • Organize and assist in implementation of research projects, including data collection and project management
    • Maintain accurate records and prepare data reports
    • Proper disposal of biohazard waste
    • Perform inventory, basic maintenance, and ordering of research supplies and equipment
    • Collaborate with investigators within the department; duties vary by investigator and project
  • Animal Care (20%)
    • Daily monitoring of physical health and well‑being of animals; administer treatments and management
    • Assist with clinical trials involving client‑owned animals
    • Restrain animals; collect blood (venipuncture) and urine (expression, cystocentesis, or catheterization)
    • Collect and prepare tissue, cellular, or microbiological samples
    • Perform routine laboratory test procedures
    • Assist in radiology, including patient positioning, image processing, and safety
    • Perform intravenous and arterial catheterization
    • Administer treatments, drugs, fluids, medications, and immunological agents by oral, parenteral, and injectable routes
    • Maintain clinical health records
  • Anesthesia Management (20%)
    • Provide initiation and maintenance of anesthesia (if licensed)
    • Perform procedures such as euthanasia, surgical assistance, and resuscitative procedures
    • Prepare operating room, instruments, and animals for sterile surgery
  • Communication and Light Laboratory Work (20%)
    • Professionally communicate with investigators, sponsors, and colleagues regarding workflow, time limits, and project status
    • Conduct light laboratory work (sample processing, cell culture, PCR)
    • Perform other reasonable tasks requested by the supervisor
