Job summary

Boston Medical Center is seeking a Laboratory Support Technician to join the Lab Support Services team. Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Support Services Supervisor, you will provide quality customer-oriented laboratory services including specimen procurement, processing and related procedures, and communicate information to users to ensure efficient department operation.

You will also assist in training less experienced technicians and students, and support a 1 pm–9:30 pm

Qualifications

  • High school diploma required or equivalent.
  • Phlebotomy, EKG or specimen processing experience preferred.
  • Ability to follow study protocols and specimen handling procedures.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Support Services Supervisor, the LST is responsible for providing quality customer oriented laboratory services including specimen procurement, specimen processing and related specialized procedures, and service to effectively communicate information to users of the Laboratory Services in order to ensure the department is able to operate efficiently and to successfully fulfill its mission. LSTs also provide training and guidance to less experienced laboratory support technicians. Position: Laboratory Support Technician Department: Lab Support Services Schedule: 1 pm-9:30pm rotating weekend and holidays

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Specimen Processing: Understands study protocols and processes specimens accordingly; Prepares the workstation with all essential supplies to ensure smooth processing of specimens; Receives and verifies identification of specimens according to laboratory policies and procedures; Labels specimens according to laboratory policies and procedures; Distributes specimens to appropriate lab sections within specific time frames; Centrifuges and aliquots specimens, and follows all special handling instructions; Processes, prepares, and stores specimens for send out to reference laboratories; Processes random and 24 hour urine specimens; Monitors and records daily temperatures and performs scheduled maintenance of equipment.
  • Customer Service and Communication: Communicates and cooperates to improve patient services and the quality of each patient's experience; Demonstrates excellent communication skills with staff members, and phone customers; Establishes positive, professional relationships with coworkers and managers to enhance the efficient operation of the department; Delivers reports in a timely fashion; Respects and follows BMC's rules of confidentiality; Consistently follows through and conveys accurate information; Answers the telephone according to department policy and procedure; Completes all appropriate logs for documentation and troubleshooting, and communicates to supervisor; Incorporates Medical Center Values into all undertakings.
  • Teamwork: Manages time appropriately and meets BMC standards for attendance and punctuality; Help coworkers on different benches as needed; Follows department guidelines for dress code; Documents activities related to Quality Improvement initiatives; Assists in the pickup and delivery of specimens; Attends department meetings or reviews minutes and documents the review; Performs special procedures as requested by supervisors, assistants, and specialists; Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.
  • Information Systems: Utilizes technical training and acquires in-depth knowledge of the Sunquest LIS and its functions; Performs Sunquest order/entry, inquiry, crediting, and other basic LIS functions; Performs patient registration functions, including information updates; Ensures current information in the specimen order or comment.
  • Training: Assists in training new lab support technicians and students; Commits to self-development by attending one BMC training session per year.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  1. Works in a clinical laboratory where there is some exposure to unpleasant odors, hazardous materials, toxins and infectious specimens but hazards are limited when proper protocols are followed.
  2. Works requires frequent walking and standing, and regular visual strain while closely examining specimens.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
  • EDUCATION: High School Diploma
  • EXPERIENCE: One year of Phlebotomy, EKG, and/or specimen processing experience is preferred.
  • CERTIFICATIONS, REGISTRATIONS, & LICENSURES: Phlebotomy Certification (ASCP) preferred.

Compensation Range: $20.12- $26.02. This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. However, our approach to determining base pay is comprehensive, and a broad range of factors is considered when making an offer. This includes education, experience, and licensure/certifications directly related to position requirements.
