Boston Medical Center is seeking a part-time Laboratory Technician Assistant (clinical lab assistant/phlebotomist) for the Lab Support department. The role requires evenings 2:30pm-11pm, 24 hours per week, with every other weekend and rotating holidays.
You will train LTAs and students, monitor workflows, and ensure timely phlebotomy services across the lab. Responsibilities include supervisory duties, performance of venipunctures, and coordinating with LIS and other departments.

Schedule: Part Time, 24hrs/week, evenings 2:30pm-11pm every other weekends required, rotating holidays required as needed.
Performs, under minimal supervision, daily workflow management of the section. Training and competency of all new LTAs as well as phlebotomy students and makes recommendations on skill assessments. Works collaboratively to monitor phlebotomy status reports to provide phlebotomy services in a timely manner. May be required to perform the duties and responsibilities of LTA, Phlebotomist and/or CLA as required for patient care. Finds coverage when needed.
High School Diploma or Equivalent Phlebotomy experience and lab experience required. Graduate of Phlebotomy Training program preferred.
Is responsible for ongoing development of his/her work skills through the use of available resources (i.e.: in-services, formal educational programs, other work groups and on-the-job training). Attends and participates in staff meetings and in-services and/or reviews documentation as required. Assists in the orientation of others and actively participates in mentoring Performs analytical and decision-making functions with minimal supervision. Recognizes and seeks assistance/consultation when appropriate. Demonstrates an understanding of relative Hospital and all-departmental policies and procedures including safety issues. Possesses awareness of programs/services provided by Hospital and where they are located.
Phlebotomy Certification Preferred, ASCP certification/eligible within a year.
Training of all new LTAs and students, maintaining current competency checklists. Coordinates and monitors activities of the LTAs on assigned shifts. Distributes work assignments and acts as a liaison between the Laboratory and other Departments.
Has demonstrated advanced skills in all areas of specimen collection, including computer expertise for troubleshooting, downloading and printers. Has the ability to direct specimens to the appropriate departments. Proficiently handles and uses all procedures and reports associated with the use of LIS devices. Reviews specimen status report at least hourly to assure all tests have been obtained and notates any time constraints in Meditech.
Can proficiently perform all duties of an LTA. Performs other clinical laboratory assistant duties and responsibilities as required at the direction of lab support supervisor. Successful in 95% of the venipunctures on inpatient and outpatient populations using the stated procedural policies.
Follows standard precaution and wears PPE to perform task as indicated in the Safety Manual. Complies with established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives. Demonstrates use of quality improvement in daily operations.
Receives specimens from couriers and checks manifests to verify appropriate count. Sorts specimen collection labels, adding, canceling, and combining test to decrease repeat venipunctures. Answers telephones and communicates pertinent information effectively.
Performs minor troubleshooting of pneumatic tube, placing a work order when necessary. Processes specimens including centrifugation, aliquoting, labeling. Prepares specimens to be sent to referral laboratories; obtains proper detailed information pertaining to sample requirements such as: test codes, appropriate specimen type and volume needed, process and deliver specimens to appropriate department.
Performs assigned duties to ensure, an adequate inventory of supplies for assigned area. Monitors inventory levels and stores equipment and supplies in a neat and orderly manner. Maintains accurate records of processes performed, using manual and computer-based systems. Follows all safety (including infection control and hazardous material) policies and procedures. Notifies lab Section Head of unsafe conditions. Successfully participates in annual Health and Safety Training and Compliance activities. Complies with all laboratory quality, health and safety policies, regulations, and requirements and with established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives. Performs other similar and related laboratory duties in assigned area as required or directed for which there are documented competencies. Respects diverse views and approaches, and contributes to maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients, and visitors.
Compensation Range: $20.31- $30.18 This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. However, our approach to determining base pay is comprehensive, and a broad range of factors is considered when making an offer. This includes education, experience, and licensure/certifications directly related to position requirements.
