Job summary

Boston Medical Center is hiring a Lab Assistant I (Phlebotomist) to manage workflow and train new staff while ensuring quality specimen collection. This role requires a high school diploma and phlebotomy experience, with certification preferred.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent, Graduate of Phlebotomy Training program preferred.
  • Phlebotomy Certification preferred; ASCP certification or eligibility within a year.
  • Phlebotomy experience and lab experience required.

Job description

Position Summary

Performs, under minimal supervision, daily workflow management of the section. Training and competency of all new LTAs as well as phlebotomy students and makes recommendations on skill assessments. Works collaboratively to monitor phlebotomy status reports to provide phlebotomy services in a timely manner. May be required to perform the duties and responsibilities of LTA, Phlebotomist and/or CLA as required for patient care. Finds coverage when needed.

Essential Responsibilities / Duties
  • Training of all new LTAs and students, maintaining current competency checklists.
  • Coordinates and monitors activities of the LTAs on assigned shifts.
  • Distributes work assignments and acts as a liaison between the Laboratory and other Departments.
  • Has demonstrated advanced skills in all areas of specimen collection, including computer expertise for troubleshooting, downloading and printers.
  • Directs specimens to the appropriate departments.
  • Proficiently handles and uses all procedures and reports associated with the use of LIS devices.
  • Reviews specimen status report at least hourly to assure all tests have been obtained and notates any time constraints in Meditech.
  • Performs other clinical laboratory assistant duties and responsibilities as required at the direction of lab support supervisor.
  • Achieves 95% success in venipunctures on inpatient and outpatient populations using the stated procedural policies.
  • Follows standard precaution and wears PPE to perform tasks as indicated in the Safety Manual.
  • Complies with established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
  • Demonstrates use of quality improvement in daily operations.
  • Receives specimens from couriers and checks manifests to verify appropriate count.
  • Sorts specimen collection labels, adding, canceling, and combining tests to decrease repeat venipunctures.
  • Answers telephones and communicates pertinent information effectively.
  • Performs minor troubleshooting of pneumatic tube, placing a work order when necessary.
  • Processes specimens including centrifugation, aliquoting, labeling.
  • Prepares specimens to be sent to referral laboratories; obtains proper detailed information pertaining to sample requirements such as test codes, appropriate specimen type and volume needed, and processes and delivers specimens to the appropriate department.
  • Ensures adequate inventory of supplies for the assigned area and monitors inventory levels.
  • Maintains accurate records of processes performed, using manual and computer-based systems.
  • Follows all safety (including infection control and hazardous material) policies and procedures. Notifies lab Section Head of unsafe conditions.
  • Participates in annual Health and Safety Training and Compliance activities.
  • Performs other similar and related laboratory duties as required or directed for which there are documented competencies.
  • Respects diverse views and contributes to maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients, and visitors.
Job Requirements
Education

High School Diploma or Equivalent. Graduate of Phlebotomy Training program preferred.

Certifications

Phlebotomy Certification preferred. ASCP certification or eligibility within a year.

Experience

Phlebotomy experience and lab experience required.

Compensation

LabBMC Compensation Range: $19.72–$29.30 per hour.
