Watson Clinic Laboratory is seeking a Lab Section Supervisor to lead Medical Laboratory Technologists, Technicians, and Assistants. The role includes scheduling, supply management, and equipment inventory control, while ensuring QA/QC and proficiency testing compliance across the department.

The position requires a BS in Medical Technology with approved training, plus Florida supervisor licensure and prior supervisory experience in a clinical lab.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology or related science with approved formal training in Medical Technology.
• Minimum 6 years as Medical Technologist with prior supervisor experience in a clinical lab.
• Active Florida Supervisor license in Hematology, Chemistry, Serology, Microbiology, and Molecular Pathology; strong QA/QC and proficiency testing knowledge.

Lab Section Supervisors plan, manage and supervise the activities of Medical Laboratory Assistants and Technicians. In addition to performing the same essential job functions as the Technologist/Technician, Supervisors also make schedules, purchase supplies, maintain equipment inventory, and evaluate staff job performance.

Essential Functions

• Assures quality control and quality assurance programs meet requirements set forth by all regulatory agencies
• Performs and supervises all routine and complex tests as ordered by the clinician
• Develops and updates department policy and procedure manuals
• Establishes and reviews that a scheduled preventive maintenance program is performed and documented on all equipment and testing systems
• Assures that Proficiency Testing surveys are performed and reported accurately and timely. Provides appropriate documentation of corrective action for results outside of acceptable limits
• Provides technical support and information to other laboratory staff members and clinicians
• Resolve problems and issues as they arise and keeps Laboratory Manager and Director of Laboratory Services informed of such situations

Supervisory Responsibility

This position manages Medical Laboratory Technologists, Medical Laboratory Technicians, and Laboratory Assistants and is responsible for the performance management of the employees within the department.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

• Lifting - Must be able to lift above shoulder height up to 10 lbs. as needed. In addition, must be able to lift up to 30 lbs. on a daily basis, multiple times a day replacing instrumentation reagents. For items weighing more than 30 lbs., a dolly or cart must be utilized.
• Pushing/Pulling - Must be able to push/pull up to 30 lbs. on a daily basis. For items weighing more than 30 lbs., a dolly or cart must be utilized.
• Carry weight, lift - Must be able to carry reagents to instrumentation weighing up to 30 lbs. on a daily basis. For items weighing more than 30 lbs., a dolly or cart must be utilized.
• Bending/Twisting/Stooping - Must be able to bend/twist/stoop to replace reagents, remove instrumentation waste, file racks of specimens, and in storing of supplies
• Sitting/Standing - Must be able to constantly stand and walk for several hours in duration. Sitting is appropriate based on workload volume and particular testing being performed (example - microscopic work)
• Smells - Ability to tolerate strong odors when disposing of specimens or reagents
• Dexterity - Must be able to perform a large amount of repetitive hand movements by utilizing computers and opening/closing specimen containers

Travel

Based on staffing needs, staff may be required to commute to other regional laboratories to provide laboratory coverage which may also require changing work hours, additional shifts and/or weekends.

Requirements

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology or related science degree along with the successful completion of an approved formal training program in Medical Technology.

Preferred Education and Experience

A minimum of 6 years experience as a Medical Technologist plus previous experience as a general supervisor in a clinical laboratory setting in the related specialty.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

Active State of Florida Supervisor's license in Hematology, Chemistry, Serology, Microbiology, and Molecular Pathology. Complete knowledge of Quality Assurance, Quality Control, and Proficiency testing programs. Complete understanding of compliance with all regulatory agencies along with the applicable State and Federal laws and regulations governing the practice of the Laboratory.
