Job summary

Cancer Center of South Florida PLLC is seeking a Laboratory Supervisor to lead day-to-day clinical and technical operations in a CLIA-certified practice. You will supervise staff, ensure accurate testing, and maintain compliance with CLIA, COLA, Florida regulations, and safety standards.

The role requires MLS certification, FL technologist licensure, and at least five years in clinical labs, with prior supervision preferred.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory technology, clinical laboratory science, biological science, healthcare, or a related field required; bachelor’s degree preferred. Education outside the United States must be evaluated and documented as equivalent.
• Minimum of five years of medical clinical laboratory experience required.
• Prior laboratory supervisory or lead experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Coordinates daily laboratory operations to support accurate, timely, and compliant testing and specimen processing.
• Provides day-to-day work direction, coordinates workflow and staffing coverage, and communicates operational priorities to laboratory personnel.
• Functions as a working supervisor and performs laboratory testing and specimen processing as needed.
• Reviews test results for accuracy, completeness, and appropriate release or escalation within the position’s authorized scope.
• Monitors testing volume, turnaround times, specimen rejection, recollection, corrected results, send-outs, and other quality measures.
• Ensures specimens are properly identified, collected, labeled, processed, tested, stored, transported, retained, and disposed of.
• Serves as a technical resource for laboratory and clinical personnel and escalates matters requiring physician, laboratory director, or pathologist review.
• Oversees applicable quality-control, quality-assurance, proficiency-testing, calibration, temperature-monitoring, maintenance, and corrective-action activities.
• Reviews testing errors, instrument failures, quality-control concerns, and proficiency-testing results; assists with investigations and recommends corrective action.
• Ensures laboratory equipment is properly operated, maintained, calibrated, monitored, and documented.
• Maintains complete, accurate, current, and inspection-ready laboratory policies, procedures, records, logs, licenses, certificates, and accreditation documentation.
• Supports compliance with applicable CLIA, COLA, Florida, manufacturer, safety, and organizational requirements and coordinates preparation for inspections and audits.
• Trains laboratory personnel and conducts or supports required competency assessments within the scope of the position’s authority.
• Monitors adherence to laboratory procedures and competency requirements and reports performance or compliance concerns to appropriate leadership.
• Maintains laboratory safety, infection-prevention, patient-identification, confidentiality, and result-reporting standards.
• Monitors laboratory supplies, reagents, controls, and testing materials to ensure they are properly stored, current, and available.
• Collaborates with the supervising physician, laboratory director, pathologists, reference laboratories, clinical teams, and operational leadership to resolve laboratory issues and improve quality and patient care.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day clinical, technical, administrative, and regulatory operations of the laboratory within a CLIA-certified private hematology/oncology practice. This position provides hands-on leadership of laboratory personnel and ensures that testing is performed accurately, efficiently, safely, and in accordance with CLIA requirements, applicable federal and state regulations, practice policies, manufacturer instructions, and established laboratory procedures. The Laboratory Supervisor will work closely with the providers, nurses, leadership, and external reference laboratories to ensure reliable and timely results that support diagnosis, treatment decisions, and ongoing patient care.

Requirements

REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory technology, clinical laboratory science, biological science, healthcare, or a related field required; bachelor’s degree preferred. Education completed outside the United States must be evaluated by a recognized credential-evaluation service and documented as equivalent to the applicable U.S. degree and coursework.
• Minimum of five years of medical clinical laboratory experience required.
• Prior laboratory supervisory or lead experience preferred.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSE OR REGISTRATION

• Medical Laboratory Scientist MLS (ASCP) certification required
• Current and valid Florida Clinical Laboratory Technologist license
• Florida Clinical Laboratory Supervisor license in specialty preferred. Must obtain the license before assuming regulatory oversight of moderate- or high-complexity testing, if required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS OR ABILITIES

• Proficient in clinical laboratory procedures, including specimen collection, analysis, quality control, equipment operation, and compliance with safety and regulatory standards (e.g., CLIA, OSHA, HIPAA) required.
• Strong foundational knowledge in medical terminology, anatomy, data entry, and infection prevention, with the ability to accurately interpret and report laboratory results using LIS and EMR systems required.
