Job description

The Department of Pathology at the University of Virginia’s (UVA) School of Medicine is currently seeking applicants for a Biorepository Technician.

The person in this position will support human biospecimen procurement, database management, and specimen shipment in support of a National Cancer Institute grant for the Cooperative Human Tissue Network, a multi-institutional biospecimen consortium. Duties include working with UVA Medical Center staff to procure human tissue and biofluid specimens, coordinating with the CHTN and UVA Biorepository staff to fulfill investigator requests, managing processing fees, packaging biospecimen shipments according to shipping regulations, and arranging courier pickups. Data entry into biorepository databases is also required.

Job Responsibilities
  • Perform duties similar to Lab and Research Aide, such as collecting specimens, setting up experiments, and preparing culture media, chemicals, reagents, and solutions as instructed.
  • Under the guidance of Principal Investigator or senior staff, perform biological, hematological, chemical, or physical analyses.
  • Participate in research or clinical work involving animal treatment, including care, feeding, cage cleaning, sanitization, and observation during post-operative or treatment periods.
  • Perform some surgical procedures on small laboratory animals as needed.
  • Prepare support materials, assist with data analysis, write reports, and help with literature reviews.
  • Operate, adjust, and maintain scientific equipment; order supplies and maintain inventory.
  • Accurately record experimental data and logs.
  • Stay informed of new laboratory techniques.
  • Provide routine technical and administrative support to research projects.
  • Coordinate schedules with study subjects, handle information intake, record results, and provide logistical support as needed.
  • Other duties may be assigned as necessary.
Minimum Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least 1 year of laboratory experience, which may include student experience; a Bachelor's degree may substitute for experience.
  • No licensure required.

Physical Demands
