Job summary

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's Engineering Division is seeking a Mechanical Technology Student Assistant. This part-time role (8-16 hrs/wk, up to 40 hrs/wk during breaks) offers hands-on experience in fabrication, testing, and maintenance within ALS and other projects.

You will learn mechanical disciplines, gain skills in installing and troubleshooting equipment, and work with metal and non-metal materials in a controlled shop.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a technical or trade program with good academic standing.
  • Basic understanding of QA principles and engineering fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with safety principles for machine shop environments.
  • Comfort using Microsoft Office and Google Docs for documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with fabrication, assembly, machining, installation, setup, operation, testing and inspection of apparatus and systems.
  • Support mechanical disciplines required to build particle accelerator components.
  • Develop skills in installing and troubleshooting technical equipment.
  • Work with a variety of materials and processes under supervision.
  • Gain experience in vacuum and cryogenic equipment as opportunities arise.
  • Operate calculators and documents using a PC to support assignments.
  • Follow safety guidelines and maintain shop cleanliness and organization.
