Job summary

Alton Memorial Hospital is seeking a patient-focused Lab Associate I to join our laboratory team. This role collects blood and non-blood specimens, performs venipuncture, and handles processing to support timely testing and accurate results.

Part-time, days/evenings with rotating weekends and holidays; you will work in a fast-paced environment dedicated to quality patient care and excellent service for patients, families, physicians, and hospital staff.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with accuracy.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Two or more years of phlebotomy experience preferred.
  • Phlebotomy certification preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Collect blood and non-blood specimens from patients.
  • Perform venipuncture and specimen collection per policies.
  • Process and prepare specimens for testing.
  • Ensure patient identification and labeling accuracy.
  • Maintain specimen integrity during collection and processing.
  • Answer lab phone calls and assist with inquiries.
  • Retrieve and distribute items via pneumatic tube system.
  • Maintain a clean, safe work environment.
  • Provide excellent customer service to patients and staff.
  • Complete other laboratory support duties as assigned.

Overview

Alton Memorial Hospital is seeking a patient-focused Lab Associate I to join our laboratory team. This position plays an important role in supporting patient care through specimen collection, processing, and laboratory support functions. We are looking for a dependable team member who enjoys working in a fast-paced healthcare environment and is committed to providing exceptional service to patients, visitors, and clinical staff.

Responsibilities
  • Collect blood and non-blood specimens from patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Perform venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures following established policies and safety guidelines.
  • Process and prepare specimens for testing, including centrifuging and handling samples within the main laboratory.
  • Ensure accurate patient identification and specimen labeling.
  • Monitor and maintain specimen integrity during collection and processing.
  • Answer incoming laboratory phone calls and assist with routine inquiries.
  • Retrieve and distribute items through the pneumatic tube system.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Provide excellent customer service to patients, families, physicians, and hospital staff.
  • Complete other laboratory support duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two or more years of phlebotomy experience in an inpatient and/or outpatient healthcare setting.
  • Previous laboratory or healthcare experience.
  • Phlebotomy certification preferred but not required.
Schedule Requirements
  • Part-time Days/Evenings.
  • Weekday shifts are generally 8 hours.
  • Weekend shifts are generally 10 hours.
  • Rotating weekend schedule (every third weekend).
  • Rotating holiday schedule required.
  • Must be flexible with scheduling needs.
  • Shifts may be scheduled anytime between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m.

Overview

Role Purpose

Performs non-blood and blood specimen collection, specimen handling/routine processing and clerical duties associated with specimen collection.

Responsibilities
  • Perform phlebotomy, positive patient identification, and positive patient interaction, proper collection and specimen integrity.
  • Coordinates a simultaneous series of tasks accurately, including STAT orders and fluctuation in workload, prioritizing work to complete within scheduled hours and established turnaround times.
  • Interacts with lab, clinical and other ancillary departments.
