Lab Associate I
Location: Alton Memorial Hospital
Schedule: Part-Time, Days/Evenings
Overview
Alton Memorial Hospital is seeking a patient-focused Lab Associate I to join our laboratory team. This position plays an important role in supporting patient care through specimen collection, processing, and laboratory support functions. We are looking for a dependable team member who enjoys working in a fast-paced healthcare environment and is committed to providing exceptional service to patients, visitors, and clinical staff.

Responsibilities
- Collect blood and non-blood specimens from patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Perform venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures following established policies and safety guidelines.
- Process and prepare specimens for testing, including centrifuging and handling samples within the main laboratory.
- Ensure accurate patient identification and specimen labeling.
- Monitor and maintain specimen integrity during collection and processing.
- Answer incoming laboratory phone calls and assist with routine inquiries.
- Retrieve and distribute items through the pneumatic tube system.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Provide excellent customer service to patients, families, physicians, and hospital staff.
- Complete other laboratory support duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Two or more years of phlebotomy experience in an inpatient and/or outpatient healthcare setting.
- Previous laboratory or healthcare experience.
- Phlebotomy certification preferred but not required.
Schedule Requirements
- Part-time Days/Evenings.
- Weekday shifts are generally 8 hours.
- Weekend shifts are generally 10 hours.
- Rotating weekend schedule (every third weekend).
- Rotating holiday schedule required.
- Must be flexible with scheduling needs.
- Shifts may be scheduled anytime between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m.

Role Purpose
Performs non-blood and blood specimen collection, specimen handling/routine processing and clerical duties associated with specimen collection.
Responsibilities
- Perform phlebotomy, positive patient identification, and positive patient interaction, proper collection and specimen integrity.
- Coordinates a simultaneous series of tasks accurately, including STAT orders and fluctuation in workload, prioritizing work to complete within scheduled hours and established turnaround times.
- Interacts with lab, clinical and other ancillary departments.
