Job summary

Alton Memorial Hospital is seeking a PRN Lab Associate I with phlebotomy experience to join the hospital laboratory team in Alton, Illinois. The role involves specimen collection, handling, and clerical duties across inpatient and outpatient settings.

Responsibilities include performing phlebotomy, processing specimens, and managing STAT orders while maintaining specimen integrity and patient interaction. PRN basis with weekend and holiday shift expectations are required.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Associate’s Degree preferred.
• 2–5 years of experience preferred in a hospital/lab setting.
• BLS and Phlebotomy certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform phlebotomy with proper patient identification and specimen integrity.
• Interprets physician orders and orders tests in the appropriate system.
• Sort and process specimens received by the laboratory and handle all specimens.
• Coordinate multiple tasks (STAT orders, workload variations) to meet turnaround times.
• May perform registration, inventory maintenance, and other duties as assigned.

Additional Information About The Role

• PRN (as-needed) team members are expected to work on an as-needed basis.
• Must be available to work a minimum of four (4) shifts within an eight-week period.
• Must work at least one (1) weekend shift during each six-week scheduling period.
• Must work a minimum of one (1) recognized holiday per calendar year.

Overview

Alton Memorial offers patients a variety of inpatient and outpatient services, including surgery services, medical imaging, interventional and diagnostic heart services, cancer care, rehabilitation, 24-hour emergency care, ambulance services and more.

Role Purpose

Perform specimen collection, specimen handling and clerical duties. Experienced in phlebotomy and proficient in performing additional tasks such as central processing duties, in-office phlebotomy, or inventory management.

Responsibilities

• Interpret physician orders and order tests in appropriate system.
• Perform phlebotomy, positive patient identification, and positive patient interaction, proper collection and specimen integrity. May work in outpatient lab, in physician office, or off campus patient service center.
• Sort and process specimens received by the laboratory and proficiently handle all specimens received in the lab.
• Coordinates a simultaneous series of tasks accurately, including STAT orders and fluctuation in workload, prioritizing work to complete within scheduled hours and established turnaround times.
• May perform registration, inventory maintenance, and other duties as assigned.
