Join the MercyOne Family! We are looking to hire a Lab Assistant.
As a Lab Assistant at MercyOne, you will work in various laboratory departments, such as collecting blood specimens from hospital patients, working with microbiology or anatomic pathology specimens, or independently at remote Patient Service Centers. Your responsibilities include creating patient encounters, ordering laboratory tests, and preparing specimens for testing. You will assist technical personnel with sample log-in, testing workflow, and specimen tracking, tailored to patient age groups including neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.
Perform venipunctures and finger sticks accurately and efficiently, ensuring proper specimen collection and patient safety.
Prepare specimens for testing.
Accept specimens and requisitions from internal and external customers, providing excellent customer service.
Identify patients and specimens using two unique identifiers and label specimen containers accurately.
Register specimens and log them into the Laboratory Information System (LIS), ensuring proper documentation and evaluation of specimen adequacy.
Process specimens as needed, including identification, aliquoting, plate streaking, slide preparation, and special handling.
Follow established procedures and policies, including infection control and bloodborne pathogen protocols.
Handle chemicals safely according to protocols.
Meet workload productivity standards and support LEAN principles.
Utilize laboratory information systems and computers proficiently.
Follow procedures to optimize test turnaround times.
Participate in peer teaching.
Manage incoming and outgoing calls with good customer service and laboratory knowledge.
Document and follow up on out-of-range temperatures.

General Requirements:
Complete Mandatory Reporter abuse training within 3 months of hire.
Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory experience preferred.
Computer skills required.
Education:
High school diploma or GED required.
