Join the MercyOne Family! We are looking to hire a Lab Assistant.
As a Lab Assistant at MercyOne, you may work in various laboratory departments to collect blood specimens from hospital patients, work with microbiology or anatomic pathology specimens, or work independently at remote Patient Service Centers. Your responsibilities include creating patient encounters, ordering laboratory tests, and preparing specimens for testing. You will assist technical personnel in sample log-in, testing workflow, and specimen tracking, appropriate to patient age including neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric adults.
You will accurately and efficiently perform venipunctures and finger sticks, ensuring the collection of proper specimens for testing and patient safety.
Prepare specimens for testing and accept specimens and requisitions from external and internal customers, utilizing excellent customer service skills.
Identify patients and specimens using two unique patient identifiers and accurately label specimen containers.
Register specimens and log them into the Laboratory Information System (LIS), ensuring proper documentation and evaluation of specimen adequacy and acceptability.
Perform specimen processing as needed, including proper identification, aliquoting, plate streaking, preparing slides, and handling special cases with proper documentation.
Follow established procedures and policies, including infection control and bloodborne pathogen protocols, and handle chemicals according to safety standards.
Meet workload productivity standards and support LEAN principles.
Work proficiently with laboratory information systems and personal computers.
Participate in peer teaching and handle incoming and outgoing calls with good customer service skills.
Follow up on and document out-of-range temperatures.

General Requirements:
Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to the population served within 3 months of hire.
Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory experience preferred.
Education:
High school diploma or GED required.
