Job summary

Heart Hospital of Austin is seeking a Laboratory Assistant to support phlebotomy, specimen processing, and laboratory clerical tasks. You will perform venipuncture, process specimens, and help with microbiology and histology support, while ensuring proper patient identification and sample handling.

The role includes answering phones, routing results, and maintaining outpatient standing orders, with opportunities to contribute to a large cardiovascular care team at a leading Austin hospital.

Qualifications

• 1 year of hospital phlebotomy experience (if primary responsibility is phlebotomy)
• High school graduate or GED equivalent
• Formal phlebotomy training from an accredited program – preferred

Responsibilities

• Perform venipuncture and capillary collection appropriate to specific age groups
• Collect, process, and transport specimens
• Identify proper tubes, containers, transport media, and storage temperature for each test type
• Ensure positive identification of each patient and respective samples
• Keep collection trays and outpatient collection area neat and well stocked
• Perform specimen processing for various sub departments
• Assist in microbiology, including plating cultures, setting up antigen detection assays, quality control, and maintenance checks
• Assist in histology, including performing basic procedures, performing routine maintenance, and assisting in tracking specimens
• Answer phones, relay messages, and transfer patient test results
• Distribute reports to Health Information Management, physicians, and clients
• Maintain records of standing orders for outpatients
