Job summary

Central Texas College is seeking a dedicated lab assistant to support the Diesel Instructor in delivering hands-on lab work and classroom activities. The role emphasizes professionalism, strong communication, and a proactive safety mindset in a college setting.

Qualifications

  • Requires high school diploma or GED with 1 year of paid Diesel-related work experience, or an Associate’s Degree/Certificate in the Diesel field.
  • Experience in shop operations, safety, OSHA rules, hazardous materials disposal, and use of diesel tools and equipment.
  • Ability to explain Diesel theories and applications in a way students can understand.

Responsibilities

  • Assist students in classroom and laboratory exercises as directed by the Instructor.
  • Monitor laboratory activities for safety infractions and report all infractions to the Diesel Instructor.
  • Proctor students during quizzes and examinations as directed by the Instructor.
  • Supervise issuing and return of all supplies, tools, and equipment used in laboratory exercises.
  • Maintain cleanliness of Diesel labs and training equipment; report any broken or unserviceable items to the Diesel Instructor.
  • Post records as directed by the Diesel Instructor.
  • Refer students experiencing difficulty to the Diesel Instructor for guidance and information.

Job description

Dedicated, effective and concerned lab assistant that assists the Diesel Instructor in a professional manner. Professional in dress and appearance at all times, present a pleasant personality when dealing with students and other staff and faculty members. High school diploma (or GED) and one (1) year of direct or related paid work experience in the Diesel field required OR Associates Degree/Certificate of Completion in the Diesel field.

  • Must have working experience and be able to perform all tasks related to the Diesel service and repair industry to include the following: shop operations, shop safety, OSHA requirements, hazardous materials disposal, use of publication, use tools and equipment, theory, application and repair of all diesel systems.
  • Must be able to properly use oxyacetylene and arc welding equipment to perform welding, heating, cutting, brazing, and soldering operations.
  • Must have some management and basic computer skills.
  • Ability to answer office telephone and communicate information to callers.
  • Ability to perform repairs and periodic maintenance on equipment assigned to the Diesel Department.
  • Must possess a pleasant personality and be able to work with people.
  • Must be highly motivated and able to work with limited supervision. Must have some management and basic computer skills.
  • Ability to clearly communicate in the English Language (Read, Write, Speak) and write legibly.
  • Must be able to explain Diesel theories and applications in a manner that students can understand.
  • Present and on time for each laboratory assigned except in cases of personal illness or inquiry, death in the immediate family or other authorized absence.
  • Notify the Diesel Instructor immediately if it is necessary to be absent from class.
  • Become familiar with the Diesel A/AS Degree and the Self-Paced Diesel Certificate Program content and operating aspects.
  • Assist students in the performance of classroom and laboratory exercises as directed by the Instructor.
  • Monitor laboratory activities for safety infractions and report all infractions to the Diesel Instructor.
  • Proctor students during quizzes and examinations as directed by the Instructor.
  • Supervise issuing and return of all supplies, tools, and equipment used in laboratory exercises.
  • Supervise clean-up activities of equipment, tools, and facilities. Report any broken or un-serviceable equipment, tools, or instruments to the Diesel Instructor.
  • Assist in keeping the Diesel labs clean and maintain training equipment used in the Diesel program.
  • Post records as directed by the Diesel Instructor.
  • Refer students that are experiencing difficulty with the program to the Diesel Instructor.
  • Refer students to the Diesel Instructor if they have questions about the current College Catalog, Industrial Technology and Skills Center Policies and Procedures or the regulations of the College concerning sequence of courses, majors, minors, graduation requirements, transfer to senior college, or other such information.
  • Notify the Diesel Instructor of any supply and equipment needs to operate the program.
  • Clean-up laboratories, office and classroom and properly store and secure equipment and training aids as directed by the Diesel Instructor.
  • Responsible for all tools, equipment and audio visual equipment that you use.
  • Perform repairs and periodic maintenance on all equipment assigned to the Diesel Department as directed by the Diesel Instructor.

  • Safely and properly operate all tools and equipment assigned to the Diesel Department.
  • Become familiar with Hazardous Materials Regulations and report any violation/spill to the Diesel Instructor. Includes proper disposal of hazardous chemicals.
