Job summary

Saint Mary of Nazareth Hospital in Chicago, IL seeks a Laboratory Assistant to support the Clinical Lab on the day shift. You will perform clerical tasks, greet patients, and assist with specimen handling in a supervised setting.

Responsibilities include phlebotomy basics, data entry, and helping with pre-analytic processing across several lab disciplines, while maintaining a clean, organized workspace and following CLIA guidelines.

Qualifications

• HS Diploma or Equivalent required.
• Minimum 1-year clinical laboratory experience preferred.
• State CPT I or CPT II certification if the laboratory is located in a state where required.
• Current BLS certificate upon hire and maintain current preferred.

Responsibilities

• Performs clerical duties such as data entry and filing.
• Greets patients and visitors with polite, friendly communication.
• Possesses basic knowledge of test terminology; supports phlebotomy activities.
• Processes specimens for pre-analytic handling across pathology, microbiology, hematology, chemistry, and blood bank.
• Stocks and orders routine supplies; maintains clean storage areas and work spaces.
• Assists in instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, and quality control under supervision.
• Supports pathology with training and evaluation; handles transcription of post-analytic results.

Overview

• Department: Clinical Lab
• Schedule: Day shift- 6am-2:30pm (primary shift and/or 9am-5:30pm with rotating holidays and weekends
• Facility: St. Mary of Nazareth Hospital
• Location: Chicago, IL 60622

Responsibilities

The Laboratory Assistant will follow the guidelines set by CLIA. Unlicensed laboratory personnel (“aides”) may not, read, result, verify or interpret any laboratory test. Unlicensed laboratory personnel may not perform any test involving the quantitative measurement of specimen or reagent, or perform any mathematical calculation in determining a test result or validity of a test procedure. Unlicensed laboratory personnel may not perform instrument calibration or review quality control results to monitor the performance of the instrument or test procedure. Unlicensed personnel require direct and constant supervision by a CLS or other licensed person during the entire time they are assisting in the analytical testing phase.

• 1) performs computer entry, filing, telephone communication and other clerical duties,
• 2) demonstrates good telephone etiquette and be able to greet patients and other visitors in a polite and friendly manner,
• 3) possesses good communication skills,
• 4) demonstrates adequate knowledge of the terminology of tests ordered in the laboratory,
• 5) demonstrates a good working knowledge of phlebotomy and the equipment used in collecting specimens from newborns to geriatric patients,
• 6) processes pathology, microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood bank specimens (pre-analytic phase only) 7) processes specimens for reference laboratory,
• 7) stocks and orders routine supplies,
• 8) keeps storage areas, trays, centrifuges, and collection areas clean,
• 9) processes or places specimens on laboratory instruments in accordance with established policy and procedures,
• 10) with proper documented training the laboratory assistant may perform, instrument preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, assist in quality control procedures, perform, primary culture inoculations, stain slide preparations, and subculture from liquid media,
• 11) other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned by the department manager/director, i.e. monitor, mail, fax, answer phone, inter departmental deliveries. Etc. 12) Assist in Pathology with training and eval,
• 13) Runner
• 14) assist in transcribing of post-analytic results.

Qualifications

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING

• HS Diploma or Equivalent required.
• Minimum 1-year clinical laboratory experience performing similar job functions preferred.
• State Certified as CPT I or CPT II if the laboratory is located in a state where required.
• Current BLS certificate upon hire and maintain current preferred.
