Job summary

Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, IL is seeking a Laboratory Assistant to support pre-analytic lab operations. This full-time night shift runs 10:00 PM–6:30 AM with rotating weekends, and includes clerical duties, specimen processing, and basic lab tasks under supervision.

Responsibilities require good communication, phlebotomy knowledge, and adherence to CLIA guidelines. Candidates should have a HS diploma, some clinical lab experience, and a current BLS certification.

Qualifications

• HS Diploma or Equivalent required.
• Minimum 1-year clinical laboratory experience preferred.
• State Certified CPT I or CPT II if the laboratory is in a state where required.
• Current BLS certificate upon hire preferred.

Responsibilities

• Performs computer entry, filing, telephone communication and other clerical duties.
• Demonstrates good telephone etiquette and greets patients and visitors in a polite manner.
• Possesses good communication skills.
• Demonstrates adequate knowledge of the terminology of tests ordered in the laboratory.
• Demonstrates knowledge of phlebotomy and collecting specimens from newborns to geriatrics.
• Processes pathology, microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood bank specimens (pre-analytic phase only).
• Stocks and orders routine supplies; keeps storage areas clean.
• With proper training may perform instrument maintenance, quality control, and basic culture work.
• Assist in Pathology with training and evaluation; Runner; assist in transcribing post-analytic results.

Responsibilities

The Laboratory Assistant will follow the guidelines set by CLIA. Unlicensed laboratory personnel ("aides") may not, read, result, verify or interpret any laboratory test. Unlicensed laboratory personnel may not perform any test involving the quantitative measurement of specimen or reagent, or perform any mathematical calculation in determining a test result or validity of a test procedure. Unlicensed laboratory personnel may not perform instrument calibration or review quality control results to monitor the performance of the instrument or test procedure. Unlicensed personnel require direct and constant supervision by a CLS or other licensed person during the entire time they are assisting in the analytical testing phase.

9. keeps storage areas, trays, centrifuges, and collection areas clean
10. processes or places specimens on laboratory instruments in accordance with established policy and procedures
11. with proper documented training the laboratory assistant may perform, instrument preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, assist in quality control procedures, perform, primary culture inoculations, stain slide preparations, and subculture from liquid media
12. other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned by the department manager/director, i.e. monitor, mail, fax, answer phone, inter departmental deliveries. Etc.

A reasonable compensation estimate for this role, which includes estimated wages, benefits, and other forms of compensation, is $22.00 to $29.61.
