Job description

Lab Animal Technician I

Location: Ridgefield CT, 06877

Duration: 12 Months

Job Summary:

This position functions under general guidance/supervision of AR management or designee to perform functions in support of AR operations in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations, guidelines, and policies on the use of laboratory animals. This position may include rotational assignment to various animal and/or support areas. In addition, this position functions as a member of a work team, actively promotes a team-oriented work environment, and may be expected to assist in the training of others and quality review of records.

Responsibilities:
  1. Primary responsibility for animal care and enrichment of routine and specialized animal colonies, and cleaning and maintenance of associated facilities and equipment including cage sanitization and preparation for use; includes animal handling, observations, reporting abnormal findings, adherence to veterinary directives, and monitoring room conditions.
  2. Maintain knowledge and ability to operate and maintain animal facility equipment including cage/rack washers, environmental monitoring equipment, etc.
  3. Perform specialized tasks or roles as assigned under the direction of a senior technician or AR management.
  4. Ensure timely and accurate documentation of tasks; assist in quality review of records.
  5. Assist in training team members in AR operations and procedures.
  6. Identify and evaluate new technologies, equipment, and methodologies for animal program improvement.
  7. Work effectively as part of a team, demonstrating communication, coordination, cooperation, and personal accountability.
  8. Verify training proficiency in husbandry, facility maintenance, and equipment use; expand skills to increase team utility.
  9. Document task completion accurately according to SOPs and management directives.
  10. Identify and report quality deficiencies during visual inspections of animals and facilities.
  11. Maintain current LOS training records and AALAS registry standing.
  12. Evaluate and implement novel approaches for program improvement.
Additional Responsibilities:

Comply with company policies, SOPs, and federal, state, and local regulations (e.g., USDA, FDA GLPs). Perform work safely.

Skills:

  • No known allergies to animals.
  • Physical effort including bending, lifting (up to 50 lbs), squatting, pushing/pulling, reaching, and long periods of standing; handling and restraint of small and large animals.
  • Use of PPE including uniforms, respiratory, eye, hearing, hand, and foot protection.
  • Work scheduled weekends and holidays.
Education and Experience:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent plus 2 years’ experience in an animal research facility or veterinary practice required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in animal science or related field preferred.
  • AALAS certification highly desirable.
  • Basic computer skills (Word, Excel, Outlook) highly desirable.
