Job Details

With a commitment to patient- and family-centered care, the Certified Surgical Technician functions as a member of the intraoperative healthcare team. Performs specific tasks to assist the surgical team in ways that value the uniqueness of each individual and address the physical, psychological, emotional, and social needs of the diverse patients served by Jefferson Health. The Certified Surgical Technician (CST) (TS-C) is responsible for creating and maintaining the sterile field, accurately anticipating the surgeon's needs intraoperatively by applying comprehensive knowledge of operative procedures, equipment, anatomy, and surgeons' preferences. The CST works closely with all perioperative team members during preoperative, intraoperative, and post-operative care, supporting decontamination and sterile supply areas, maintaining courteous and professional interactions with patients and staff, and precepting as required.

Essential Functions
  1. Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with Jefferson's values.
  2. Recognizes patients and their families or designated care partners, providing safe, compassionate, and coordinated care respecting personal preferences, priorities, needs, and cultural beliefs.
  3. Communicates and supports the interprofessional team, patients, families, and care partners.
  4. Inspects the Operating Room (OR) for cleanliness, secures, sets up, and prepares OR equipment, instruments, and supplies required for surgical procedures.
  5. Participates in team time outs, advocating for patient safety and high-quality care in the perioperative setting.
  6. Assists with gowning and gloving of the surgical team, including the surgeon.
  7. Prepares the sterile field, including draping the patient and maintaining sterile integrity.
  8. Provides thorough reports to relief personnel on the status of procedures, instruments, and materials to ensure smooth transitions.
  9. Performs counts of sharps, sponges, and instruments with the circulating nurse before, during, and after procedures, initiating corrective actions if counts are incorrect.
  10. Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.
  11. Maintains supplies and equipment to ensure efficient operations.
  12. Helps maintain a safe, neat, and clean environment in the OR.
  13. Acts as a primary preceptor to other surgical team members as needed.
Job Description

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required. Graduate of a surgical technician training program.
  • Prior surgical technician experience preferred.

Minimum Certifications, Registration or License Requirements:

  • Maintain required certification as a surgical technician.
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
