Job summary

The R.J. Corman Railroad Company is seeking a Backhoe Operator/Laborer to join our team on our short line through Middlesboro, KY and Harrogate, TN.

The role involves operating backhoes and performing labor duties, with emphasis on safety, equipment maintenance, and adherence to DOT regulations. This is a full-time position offering comprehensive benefits. Candidates must be able to perform physically demanding tasks and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Qualifications

• Experience operating backhoes or similar heavy equipment.
• Basics in mechanical troubleshooting.
• Railroad construction/maintenance experience preferred.

Job description

The R.J. Corman Railroad Company is currently seeking a Backhoe Operator/Laborer to join our team on our short line through Middlesboro, KY and Harrogate, TN.

Responsibilities

• Operate Specialized equipment. (i.e. Backhoe, etc.)
• Performs preventative maintenance on heavy or specialized equipment.
• Maintains proper equipment appearance and cleanliness.
• May perform labor duties as needed.
• Communicates with supervisor throughout the job process.
• Ensures working conditions are safe, and proper PPE is being used as job duties require.
• Follow DOT regulations; ensure proper permits and driving regulations are followed.

Specialized or Technical Knowledge, or Education and Experience:â¯

• Demonstrated operation experience and equipment knowledge.
• Basic mechanical knowledge to troubleshoot simple mechanical failures.
• Previous experience in railroad construction or maintenance preferred.

Physical Requirements

• Able to perform physical strenuous work.
• Able to frequently bend, stoop, kneel, and crouch.
• Able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
• Requires occasional use of 30 lb claw bar to remove spikes, requiring application of 50 lbs of force.
• Requires occasional use of 10 lb sledge hammer to drive spikes, requiring application of 75 lbs of force.
• Able to walk, climb, and maintain balance on equipment, stairs, ladders, uneven terrain, rails and ballast in a safe manner.
• Able to navigate into confined spaces if necessary.

Environmental Conditions

• Performs duties in primarily outside environments, in and around moving locomotives, railcars, vehicles, and equipment.
• Frequent exposure to weather elements: appropriate PPE required.
