Job summary

The Snoqualmie Tribe is seeking a Canoe Family Kitchen Manager responsible for planning and preparing meals for canoe journey events. Ideal candidates will have experience in culinary arts, the ability to oversee a team, and adhere to food safety standards. Seasonal position from June 1 - August 30 with competitive hourly compensation starting at $27.21.

Qualifications

Job description

Description

The position of Canoe Family Kitchen Manager consists of planning and preparation, seasoning and cooking of salads, soups, fish, meats, vegetables, desserts and other food items. Preparing food and ingredients, operating and cleaning food service equipment such as food warmers, ovens deep fryers, grills and broilers. In addition to these duties this individual will also focus on food presentation and the cleanliness of the kitchen and service areas. Will report directly to Canoe Journey Manager and will have other duties as assigned. Must be able to work any shift assigned, including weekends and be willing to work in all types of weather conditions.

Essential Duties:

  • Plan, Prepare, cook and serve meals for up to 75 or more canoe journey participants for breakfast and dinner service.
  • Ensure that food for meals is prepped properly to ensure it is ready to be cooked by following established guidelines for thawing, marinating, etc.
  • Check the quality of raw and cooked food products to ensure that standards are met.
  • Help check the quantity and quality of the product received.
  • Order, inspect, and inventory required supplies and equipment to ensure that they are up to industry standards and are onsite and available at various landing sites through the Snoqualmie Tribe’s Canoe Journey.
  • Inventory , clean, and store all equipment following Canoe Journey.
  • Prepare a meal plan for the entirety of journey, oversee grocery ordering and storage. This may include separate meals for the camp and the pullers as they may arrive onsite at different times.
  • Adjust meal plans accordingly to ensure dietary restrictions of attendees are met.
  • Prepare the meal for the celebration at the completion of Journey.
  • Instruct volunteers and other workers in the preparation and execution of recipes.
  • Monitor sanitation practices to ensure that employees follow standards and regulations.
  • Supervise and coordinate activities of volunteers and workers engaged in food preparation.
  • Work cooperatively with other staff and all other Canoe Journey employees and volunteers.
  • May be required to shop for last minute food items needed for meals.
  • Will be required to load and unload the necessary supplies at each stop.

Additional Duties:

  • The Tribe values its commitment to community service and the well-being of its members. In recognition of this, each employee may be expected to perform duties from time to time which may not be related to their regular responsibilities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Skilled in food preparation by peeling, chopping, grinding, pairing, cutting, slicing, dicing, pureeing, dredging, flouring, or breading for upcoming meals.
  • Knowledge of kitchen sanitary and safety standards.
  • Ability to monitor or assess the performance of yourself, other individuals or the operation to make improvements or take corrective actions.
  • Ability to motivate, develop, and direct people.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, be professional, efficient, detail-oriented and courteous. A team play attitude is expected for this position.
  • Ability to give full attention to what others are saying and follow directions.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Continuous requirement for professional demeanor and appropriate camp staff attire.
  • Continuous work as a team member and ability to work independently with limited supervision.

Education & Experience:

Education Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Education Preferred:

  • Successful completion of culinary arts program.

Experience:

  • Experience incorporating traditional foods into meals is preferred.
  • One year or more of experience in preparing and cooking for large groups.
  • Preparing food for traveling parties, preferred.

Certifications/Licenses:

  • Must have and maintain a current Food handler’s card or obtain prior to employment.
  • First Aid/CPR certification required

Other Requirements:

  • Must be able to pass a thorough pre-employment background investigation.
  • Must agree to be subject to the Tribe's Controlled Substance and Alcohol Testing Policy to include pre-employment screening.
  • Must have and maintain a valid and unrestricted WA state drivers’ license and proof of insurance. Daily travel will be required.

Work Environment:

The work environment is all outdoors with exposure to the pacific northwest weather. Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours with limited equipment and facilities, with daily exposure to outside elements including rain, sun, heat, and insects. Willingness to work in camp facilities that may not have AC. Frequent work under stress and under pressure of deadlines with overlapping projects.

The Snoqualmie Indian Tribe follows the Tribal Hiring Preference as outlined in tribal policies, including the Tribal Employment Rights Ordinance (TERO). TERO sets forth certain hiring preferences for qualified individuals who are enrolled in a federally recognized Indian tribe, as well as, in some cases, preference for certain family members of those individuals.

Additional Information:

  • Hourly, compensation will be determined based on experience and starts at $27.21 per hour.
  • This position is a seasonal full-time position with a duration from June 1 - August 30, and employment is at will.
