Job summary

Abode is seeking a Kitchen Coordinator for the Kirk Emergency Shelter/Veterans program in San Jose, CA. The role oversees kitchen operations, meal service, inventory, and staff/volunteers, with required reporting and training duties.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Control food inventory, including shopping and/or picking up donations.
  • Shop for large quantities of food supplies within budget guidelines.
  • Develop the weekly meal menu for shelter guests.
  • Be on site and accessible to meal service volunteers during meal prep and service.
  • Develop and implement clean kitchen and equipment program.
  • Provide reports and assist with intake/exit procedures for participants.

Kitchen Coordinator

Abode, one of the largest and effective nonprofits working to end homelessness in the Bay Area, is seeking a Kitchen Coordinator for our Kirk Emergency Shelter/Veterans program in San Jose, CA. Veterans highly encouraged to apply.

This position requires a flexible work schedule. Typical hours will fall between 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM, with some evening and weekend hours required as needed.

About the role

The Kitchen Coordinator is responsible for the oversight of kitchen operations and supervision of meal services program, inventory supply, volunteers, and staff at an Abode homeless shelter.â¯This position is also responsible for completing required reports, intake and exit procedures for participants, and conducting required training for volunteers and staff.

How You Make An Impact
  • Control food inventory, including shopping and/or picking up donations.

  • As applicable, develop and maintain cooperative and productive working relationship with meal service program volunteers.
  • Be on site and accessible to meal service program volunteers during meal preparation and service.â¯
  • Develop and implement an acceptable clean kitchen and equipment program.
  • Provide information and recommendations to the Shelter Manager regarding program evaluation and modifications to better meet needs of the kitchen, meal program, and inventory control.
  • Ensure proper maintenance of kitchen, dining rooms, kitchen equipment, and storage pantries.
  • Maintain data quality control and reporting measures of the food service program.
  • Monitor and maintain the inventory, supplies, and condition of the kitchen. Ensure dining rooms and kitchen are stocked with necessary meal service supplies (plates, bowls, silverware, cups, etc.).â¯
  • Develop and implement general kitchen, meal preparation, and serving and cleaning procedures.
  • Purge kitchen refrigerators and food pantry at least once a week, purge freezers once a week and additional food storage spaces 1-2 times a quarter. Ensure all expired and spoiled food is disposed of in a timely manner.â¯
  • Maintain acceptable standards of professional conduct.
  • Attend outside meetings or training pertaining to the safety and wellbeing of the meal service program.â¯
  • Assist at the front desk as needed.â¯
  • Act as a member of a cohesive team.â­ Maintain professional image.
  • Conduct SafeServ training for volunteers and staff 1-2 times a quarter as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
How You Meet Qualifications

  • Outstanding communication skills and high degree of emotional intelligence, cultural humility, with a proven track record to build and maintain effective relationships with a wide variety of internal and external contacts.
