The St. Mary's Food Bank Skills Center is seeking a Kitchen Assistant to support our Chef Instructors in the Community Kitchen culinary program.
Position Responsibilities
- Assist with teaching basic culinary skills and the use of kitchen equipment under the guidance of Chef Instructors.
- Help open the training kitchen and prepare for daily activities.
- Ensure students follow proper food handling and sanitation guidelines under supervision.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and well-maintained kitchen.
- Keep current inventory of food items, paper goods, and cleaning supplies.
- Assist Chef Instructors with checking in and storing weekly food orders.
- Inspect the kitchen with the student team leader after cleaning.
- Record cooler and freezer temperatures accurately.
- Label, rotate, and dispose of food products based on expiration dates.
- Join Chefs at events related to the CK program and Food Bank during and after hours.
- Serve as a respectful and professional mentor to students.
- Maintain professional boundaries with students.
- Report concerns regarding food, facilities, or students to the Kitchen Manager.
- Prepare Mise en Place for demonstrations and daily activities.
- Copy recipes for student cooking classes.
- Assist in meal preparation for students, staff, and guests.
- Support catering events on and off-site as instructed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements
- Lift, carry, and pull up to fifty pounds.
- Stand for extended periods.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Basic typing and computer skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well with others.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Willingness to work with and teach a diverse population.
