Job summary

GMHC is seeking a Kitchen Assistant to support a high‑volume production kitchen in New York. You will assist with food preparation, maintain cleanliness, operate dishwashing equipment, and help manage pantry inventory for lunch service.

Must follow health regulations, and support volunteers; ServSafe certification within 60 days; High School diploma required; prior experience in food service is preferred. This role is on-site and involves occasional event support.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • ServSafe certification required or must be obtained within 60 days of hire.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in food preparation or food service.
  • Experience in high‑volume or institutional kitchens preferred.
  • Knowledge of food safety, sanitation, soups, sauces, and large batch cooking required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Cook and Cook Assistant with daily food preparation and storage in accordance with health and safety regulations.
  • Wash dishes and clean kitchen equipment and surfaces in compliance with sanitation standards.
  • Follow standardized recipes and ensure meals are prepared using high‑quality ingredients.
  • Comply with all food safety guidelines, including proper food handling, storage, hygiene, and temperature control.
  • Ensure accurate labeling of all food items, including ingredients, allergens, and preparation dates.
  • Maintain a clean and organized kitchen environment, including proper disposal of waste and recycling.
  • Identify and report any issues related to food production or kitchen equipment to the Cook.
  • Provide a welcoming and supportive environment for volunteers working in the kitchen.
  • Support the Cook and Director of Nutrition and Meals Services with special projects and events as needed.

Job description

Full‑time Position
Kitchen Assistant plays a vital role in the smooth operation of a high‑volume production kitchen, supporting the Cook and Cook Assistant in all aspects of lunch service. Key responsibilities include assisting with food preparation, maintaining kitchen cleanliness and organization, operating dishwashing equipment, and managing pantry inventory. The Kitchen Assistant also helps ensure that food is prepared and served in accordance with New York State and NYC Department of Health regulations. In addition to back‑of‑house duties, the Kitchen Assistant supports volunteer staff, providing guidance and ensuring tasks are completed safely and efficiently. The work schedule may occasionally vary to align with holidays, agency programming, or special events.
Essential Job Functions
  • Assist the Cook and Cook Assistant with daily food preparation and storage in accordance with health and safety regulations.

Other Responsibilities
  • Ensure all kitchen tools and equipment are properly cleaned and sanitized after use.
  • Assist with inventory control, including receiving deliveries and organizing stock.
  • Participate in relevant training sessions to stay up to date with food safety practices.
  • Promote a culture of integrity, teamwork, and excellence in the kitchen.
  • Contribute to a professional and inclusive environment that values the contributions of volunteers.
  • Assist with the setup and breakdown of meal service as needed.
  • Support agency‑wide initiatives, such as the annual AIDS Walk New York.
Requirements
Special Skills and Knowledge
  • Ability to follow menu plans, large quantity recipes, and schedules.
Education and Certification
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • ServSafe certification required (or must be obtained within 60 days of hire).
Experience
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in food preparation or food service.
  • Experience in high‑volume or institutional kitchens preferred.
  • Knowledge of food safety, sanitation, soups, sauces, and large batch cooking required.
Language Skills
  • Must be able to speak and understand basic English.
  • Fluency in Spanish strongly preferred.
Technical Skills
  • Basic computer skills required (e.g., Microsoft Office or similar software for inventory or scheduling).
Work Environment & Schedule
  • Work is primarily on‑site in a commercial kitchen environment.
  • Must be flexible to adjust to agency schedules, including holiday and event coverage.
  • Participation in GMHC events, including AIDS Walk New York, is required for all staff.
Physical Demands & While Carrying Out the Responsibilities of This Role
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 40 lbs.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks.
  • May be exposed to heat, cold, and noise typical of a commercial kitchen.
