Kitchen and Volunteer Coordinator at Senior Coastsiders

Senior Coastsiders is hiring a Kitchen and Volunteer Coordinator to assist us with our meal program. For nearly 50 years, Senior Coastsiders has helped older adults on the San Mateo County Coastside, from Montara to Pescadero, live healthy, connected, and independent lives through services like Home Delivered Meals, congregate dining, transportation, care management, and enriching classes and activities. Our kitchen is at the heart of that work, preparing nutritious meals every day that nourish our community, whether shared in our dining room or delivered to the doors of those who can’t make it in.

Position Summary

The Kitchen Lead supports the daily operation of Senior Coastsiders’ kitchen, which prepares meals that are either served in our dining room or home delivered, by assisting the Kitchen Manager and Chef with food preparation and service, and assists the Program Manager and Volunteer Coordinator with volunteer recruitment, retention and coordination. This role helps ensure meals are prepared, served and delivered safely, efficiently, and with care for the older adults we serve. The Kitchen Lead will step in as a substitute when meal service volunteers are unavailable.

Key Responsibilities

• Support daily management of kitchen operations, congregate dining and home delivered meals logistics
• Assist in training new kitchen and meal delivery volunteers on procedures, safety, and expectations
• Collaborate with the Program & Volunteer Manager to support recruitment efforts to build and maintain a reliable volunteer base
• Serve as a substitute for kitchen and meal delivery volunteers when coverage gaps arise (including food prep, packing, and delivery routes as needed)
• Communicate schedule changes, coverage needs, or volunteer concerns to the Kitchen Manager and Program & Volunteer Manager.

Food Preparation & Service

• Assist the Chef and Kitchen Manager with food preparation, portioning, and packing for Home Delivered Meals and congregate dining
• Maintain a clean, organized, and food-safe kitchen environment
• Follow food safety and sanitation standards at all times

General Support

• Provide day-to-day support to the Chef, Kitchen Manager, and Kitchen Assistant as needed
• Assist with basic administrative tasks related to volunteer scheduling and kitchen recordkeeping

Qualifications

• Prior experience in a kitchen, food service, or volunteer coordination setting preferred
• Computer literate — comfortable using email, basic scheduling tools, and simple recordkeeping software
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills; comfortable working with volunteers and older adults
• Ability to follow food safety guidelines; Food Handler certification required (or obtained within [30/60] days of hire)
• Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently as well as part of a team
• Physical ability to stand for extended periods, lift up to [25–30] lbs, and perform repetitive kitchen tasks
• Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus
