Job summary

The International Museum of the Horse is seeking an Exhibition Specialist to fabricate and maintain museum exhibits and to collaborate with the Collections and Education teams on exhibit planning and design.

You will fabricate with hand and power tools, install lighting, mount panels, and maintain exhibit spaces. Strong knowledge of safety, ADA regulations, and object handling is required; occasional evening or weekend work may be needed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required; bachelor’s degree or vocational training preferred.
• Knowledge of museum standards, ADA regulations, and safety practices.
• Driver’s License. Proficiency with tools and equipment for fabricating and installing exhibits.

Responsibilities

• Fabrication with hand and power tools using wood, metal, acrylic, fabric, and foam.
• Fabricate exhibit structures, scenery, cases, mounts, and interactive educational materials.
• Print, mount, and install panels and signage.
• Maintain exhibit spaces, lighting, and related infrastructure.
• Inspect exhibits, manage costs, order materials, and track expenses.
• Adhere to museum missions and safety standards.

Job description

The International Museum of the Horse focuses on the relationship between humans and horses throughout world history. The Exhibition Specialist is responsible for fabrication and maintenance of museum exhibits. They play an integral part of exhibit planning and design, collaborating with the Collections and Education team.

Primary Responsibilities

• Fabrication with hand and power tools, using a variety of materials including but not limited to wood, metal, acrylic, fabric, and foam
• Fabricate exhibit structures, scenery, cases, mounts, and interactive and educational materials
• Print and mount panels and signage
• Install exhibit structures, cases, mounts, barriers, lighting, panels, and signage
• Maintain exhibit spaces including but not limited to repairs, paint, flooring, and space dividers
• Maintain work areas, tools, equipment, and exhibit structures, cases, and mounts
• Routine exhibit inspections: clean and repair as necessary, and identify future needs
• Maintain exhibit lighting and lighting storage
• Exhibit content, layout, and design
• Schedules for exhibits, rotating objects, and temporary displays
• Estimate exhibit costs and track expenses
• Order materials and supplies
• Adherence to the KHP and Museum missions and policies
• Practice proper and safe object handling, including moving, packing, unpacking, installing, and de- installing, and Assisting with object photography, transportation, and storage
• Professional development and staying current with museum best practices and procedures
• Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required
• Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION:

High school diploma or equivalent. Bachelor’s degree or completion of vocational or trade school in relevant field preferred

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS:

Three years of professional experience in museum exhibit production and fabrication, set design, or other relevant experience; five+ years preferred

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.):

Previous experience of museum exhibits and object handling. Knowledge of museum standards and best practices, security, lighting, and ADA regulations. Driver’s License. Proficiency with principles, techniques, tools, and equipment used in designing, fabricating, and installing museum exhibits. Knowledge of electrical and, or, audio-visual technologies a plus

Working Conditions

Ability to lift and, or, move up to 50lbs Ability to use hand and power tools, ladders, and work from heights. Intermittent physical activity such as walking, standing, sitting, bending, and stooping. Ability to work around paint, wood, dust, chemical products, and animal dander.
