Job summary

County of Hawaiʻi is seeking an advanced trainee for the Office of Aging - Access Division in Hilo. The role involves handling complex cases toward independence, community outreach, and resource database development, with direct service duties as needed.

The position is a one-time temporary full-time vacancy not-to-exceed June 30, 2028, with potential for conversion to permanent; incumbents will work with an interdisciplinary team and participate in public events island-wide to promote ADRC

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university (scan and attach transcript).
  • One year of professional work experience which involved case management or support planning in social services, health, or education.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in cases with psychosocial, physical, mental, and environmental issues and may involve families in which discord exists.
  • Works with interdisciplinary team members to ensure effective case coordination.
  • Refers to established policies and procedures, casework methods and techniques, and independent judgment to address more routine aspects of casework.
  • Participates in health fairs and other public events island-wide to increase public knowledge of the ADRC and services available; distributes ADRC promotional materials.
  • Provides information to the public regarding aging and disability issues and available community services and resources.
  • Participates in the development of a resource database; reviews data to maintain the accuracy and currency of information; ensures accessibility to the public and to persons with disabilities.
  • Assists in organizing appropriate committee meetings, community public relations and educational events; prepares informational brochures and electronic presentations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

As an advanced trainee, receives increasingly complex cases while continuing to advance toward becoming an independent worker; engages in community outreach and resource database development; engages in direct service that may require ongoing intervention and assistance; and performs other related duties as required.

There is one (1) immediate temporary full-time vacancy not-to-exceed June 30, 2028 with the Office of Aging - Access Division in Hilo.

The eligible list may be used for other permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment.

  • Participates in cases that may include those with a variety of psychosocial, physical, mental, and environmental issues and may involve families in which discord exists.
  • Works with interdisciplinary team members to ensure effective case coordination.
  • Refers to established policies and procedures, casework methods and techniques, and independent judgment to address more routine aspects of casework.
  • Participates in health fairs and other public events island-wide to increase public knowledge of the Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) and services available; distributes ADRC promotional materials.
  • Provides information to the public regarding aging and disability issues and available community services and resources.
  • Participates in the development of a resource database; reviews data to maintain the accuracy and currency of information; ensures accessibility to the public and to persons with disabilities.
  • Assists in organizing appropriate committee meetings, community public relations and educational events; prepares informational brochures and electronic presentations.

Training and Experience
  • graduation from an accredited college or university with a baccalaureate degree (scan and attach a copy of your official college transcript to your application), and
  • one (1) year of professional work experience which involved case management or support planning in social services, health, or education.
License Requirement
  • possession of a valid State of Hawai'i driver's license (Class 3) or any other valid comparable driver’s license at time of filing. (You will be required to submit your valid driver’s license at time of hire).

Examination: All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant's training, education and experience as presented in the application.

In-person interviews and/or further testing in Hawai'i County may be required at the discretion of the hiring department/agency. If in-person interviews and/or further testing are required, applicants who are referred to the hiring department/agency must be available to participate in person and at their own expense at that phase of the selection process.

Knowledge of

Principles and practices of behavioral sciences, aging, and disability; research, evaluation, and interviewing methods and techniques; report writing; community organizations and resources pertaining to older adults and persons with disabilities; and casework methods and techniques such as assessment and diagnosis that are used to evaluate and provide treatment.

Ability to

Understand, interpret, and apply laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to the agency's programs; research, collect, analyze, and evaluate information; prepare reports of findings and identify alternative actions; provide case management services; establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse population and members of interdisciplinary teams; communicate effectively orally and in writing; and supervise the work of others.
