Job summary

Virginia Beach City Public Schools seeks a qualified sign language interpreter to support deaf and hard‑of‑hearing students across the district. The role covers K‑12 content and IEP‑driven needs.

You will interpret for IEP meetings, parent conferences, Deaf staff, assemblies, performances, field trips and other activities, while mentoring new interpreters and promoting cultural understanding. A valid driver's license and VA/ national certifications are required.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Passing score on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) Written Test required.
• Minimum Level 3.5 on the EIPA Performance Test or equivalent state/national certification recognized by VA as equivalent to VQAS Level III.
• Equivalent certification recognized by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing acceptable.
• Preferred: Associate degree or higher.

Responsibilities

• Interpret for deaf or hard‑of‑hearing students, K‑12, as per IEP.
• Interpret for IEP meetings, parent conferences and Deaf staff.
• Interpret for assemblies, performances, announcements, field trips.
• Interpret outside school day activities (tutoring, clubs, sports, PTA meetings).
• Mentor newly hired interpreters and students in training programs.
• Promote cultural understanding and serve as a resource for staff.
• Continue professional development to maintain state/national qualifications.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
