Job summary

The City of Elizabeth City is seeking an entry-level Sanitation Equipment Maintenance Assistant to train in inspecting, maintaining, and repairing municipal sanitation trucks and related equipment. Under close supervision, you will learn lubrication, fluid checks, minor repairs, and how to keep maintenance logs, while supporting experienced staff in daily operations.

This role requires physical work outdoors and compliance with safety rules; a valid NC driver's license is required with CDL Class

Qualifications

• Entry-level position with on-the-job training.
• Must learn to operate and maintain sanitation equipment.
• Able to perform physical tasks outdoors in varying weather.
• Must safely handle tools and follow safety procedures.

Responsibilities

• Assist with inspection, maintenance, and repair of sanitation trucks and related equipment.
• Learn preventive maintenance procedures including lubrication and filter replacement.
• Assist with basic component replacement and minor repairs under supervision.
• Clean, wash, and maintain vehicles, tools, and work areas.
• Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections and report deficiencies.
• Maintain maintenance records, work orders, and service logs.
• Operate sanitation vehicles as trained and licensed.
• Participate in on-the-job training and required programs.
• Respond to emergency service needs as directed.
