Junior Project Controller

  • Pay Rate: $39.11/hour on W2

Raise is currently hiring a Junior Project Controller on behalf of our client, an industry leader experiencing continued growth and expanding its team to meet increasing operational needs.

Overview

The Project Controls function works collaboratively with project managers and stakeholders across engineering, procurement, construction, and accounting to monitor project performance and help ensure projects meet established cost, schedule, and scope objectives.

This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated professional to join a project controls team supporting large-scale capital projects. The successful candidate will work closely with Project Managers and experienced Project Controllers to support project initiation, cost management, forecasting, reporting, progress measurement, and project closeout.

Reporting to the Program Services Manager, the Junior Project Controller will provide financial and project controls support while developing expertise in project cost management and controls methodologies.

Responsibilities
  • Track and record project costs through work orders, purchase orders, requisitions, and invoices.
  • Complete requisitions for the commitment of project materials and services.
  • Review project invoices and verify that costs align with incurred costs and approved commitments.
  • Maintain project time phasing for control budgets and estimates to complete.
  • Compile incurred-cost reports and provide variance explanations.
  • Update cost management systems with time-phased data, contractor progress, and project trends.
  • Monitor and evaluate project cost data and progress to identify trends and forecast future expenditures.
  • Support Project Managers with financial reporting and analysis related to project estimating, contractor selection, and contractor management.
  • Review contractor costs and progress and provide input to estimates at completion.
  • Resolve exceptions, discrepancies, or inaccuracies in forecast and cost data.
  • Assist with Final Cost Reconciliation and project closeout activities.
  • Assist in preparing detailed project and program cost reports, scorecards, project scans, and other management reporting.
  • Support the review of project estimates and provide input for mapping costs to the control Work Breakdown Structure (WBS).
  • Review project schedules and maintain a list of key project milestones.
  • Develop an understanding of overall project scope and its relationship to cost and schedule.
  • Monitor cost progress and performance metrics to identify potential and pending trends.
  • Apply sound judgment when classifying, compiling, and analyzing project cost and performance data.
  • Share cost performance insights and the project "data story" with project teams and leadership through discussions and detailed reports.
  • Identify opportunities to improve forecasting and project cost-control methodologies and document lessons learned.
  • Develop an understanding of the relationship between project cost and schedule data.
  • Participate in project meetings, including HRIM and QRA meetings, as required.
  • Provide overall support to Intermediate and Senior Project Controllers.
  • Execute project controller activities from project initiation through project closure.
  • Maintain a professional, positive presence with project team members, leadership, contractors, vendors, and other stakeholders.
  • Perform other project controls and administrative duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Degree in Accounting, Business Management, Engineering, or Project Management (preferred).
  • 5 or more years of related experience with cost control concepts and practices on capital projects (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Proficiency with Excel spreadsheets, word processing, and database software.
  • Strong written, verbal, and electronic communication skills; ability to communicate with all levels of the organization.
  • A proactive approach to learning new processes, tools, and projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge or experience with project and portfolio cost management processes, policies, and principles.
  • Experience supporting low- to moderate-risk capital projects.
  • Working knowledge of the relationship between cost and schedule data.
  • Basic understanding of Earned Value Management (EVM), rules of credit, and progress measurement.
  • Familiarity with contractor cost and progress monitoring.
  • Experience with project cost reporting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
  • Ability to analyze complex information and communicate a clear data story to project teams and leadership.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and confidence presenting information to senior leaders.
  • Familiarity with project controls systems, cost management systems, WBS structures, and project reporting tools.
