Qualifications

  • 1–3 years’ experience with mechanism or part design for automation products.
  • Proficiency in NX and familiarity with Windchill is preferred.
  • Experience with FEA or CFD concepts and prototyping skills.

Responsibilities

  • Work on brackets, mechanisms and gear/torque systems.
  • Participate in product launches via DFMEA, DVP&R, and 8D methodology.
  • Prototype using 3D printing and machine shop capabilities.

Product Development Engineer

Kelly® Engineering is hiring a Junior Product Development Engineer for a contract position with our Troy, MI based client. We are seeking self-starter with strong proficiency in NX and mechanical design. Overview

This client designs and manufactures industrial automated machinery. They have a small global product development team that focuses on design, prototype, test, design validation for product development of automated machinery systems. This is a fast paced and collaborative product development environment.

In this role, you will work under a senior engineer, designing parts, mechanisms, and/or mechanical systems for new industrial automation products. You’ll contribute to prototyping, test, and troubleshooting systems for functionality. Throughout this process, you’ll collaborate with other team members, European design teams, electrical engineering, machine shop, and more.

Responsibilities
  • Designs, develops and updates mechanical systems for products and equipment for new applications, systems improvements, and cost savings.
  • Brackets, mechanical components
  • Mechanism design – gears, torque systems, spindles, housings
  • DFM for machining, casting, assembly, metal fabrication
  • Mechanical systems for machinery
  • Participate in new/existing product launches via FMEA, DVP&R, 8D Methodology.
  • Uses DFMEA to capture lessons learned for future usage and drive product improvement
  • Prototyping – 3D printing, machine shop, assembly
  • Functionality testing, design validation & verification
  • Responsible for contact with mechanical tooling components sources for verification of test and performance requirements; assists purchasing and quality control in resolving technical questions or difficulties.
  • Coordinates the specification, build, and installation of complete systems to meet customer requirements.
  • Provides technical assistance in mechanical matters to internal and external customers as required.
  • Reviews, interprets, and applies FEA or CFD reports as required.
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineers on team (locally and Europe), electrical engineering, software, machine shop, and production.
  • Provides expert assistance to other areas as directed and performs all other duties as assigned.
  • Able to attend periodic virtual meetings with European team scheduled at 6AM or 7AM
Qualifications
  • BS in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering or related, required
  • 1-3 years’ experience with mechanism or part design for automation products, automatic feeding, electro-mechanical products, or robotic equipment or machinery
  • Co-Op or internship experience will be considered
  • Proficient with NX required, Windchill a plus for file management
  • Working knowledge or coursework in FEA or CFD
  • Any of the following prototyping skills – 3D printing, assembly, fabrication, or machining
  • Good technical writing skills
  • Hands on mechanical trouble shooting
  • Strong team-oriented problem-solving skills
  • Collaborative self-driven
