Job summary

The City of Grand Rapids is seeking a qualified planner to assist at counter and by phone, interpreting and administering the zoning ordinance. You will work with developers and prepare cases for Planning Commission review, and engage in outreach regarding planning and zoning, including plan and permit reviews.

Essential duties include providing front-desk assistance, researching zoning regulations, preparing materials for meetings, supporting CAD drafting, and coordinating with Code Compliance

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in City Planning, Public Administration, Architecture, or related field.
  • Some related work experience which could be satisfied through an internship or relevant project.
  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience providing required skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provides counter and phone assistance to respond to public inquiries regarding zoning interpretations.
  • Assists on urban planning projects and analyzes data on land use and demographics.
  • Researches zoning regulations and drafts responses for developers; presents at meetings.
  • Prepares materials for Planning Commission or other meetings; supports documentation.
  • Works with Code Compliance to compile data and reports.
  • Communicates with developers, engineers, and the public on land use and zoning.
  • Assists with building permit and land use site plan reviews to ensure compliance.
