Position Summary

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Lifeguard creates a safe, welcoming, and respectful environment while promoting and maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

Essential Functions

• Supports active surveillance of the pool area.
• Knows and responds to emergency procedures immediately, completing reports as required.
• Supports safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic areas.
• Remains calm and objective under pressure.
• Maintains accurate records as required.
• Supports equipment checks and ensures availability of necessary equipment.
• Checks for hazardous conditions upon arrival.
• Performs chemical testing as needed and takes appropriate actions.

Qualifications

• Minimum age of 15
• Certifications: Basic life support or professional rescuer CPR/AED, first aid, and emergency oxygen administration
• Current Lifeguard Certification
• Additional trainings within first week of work
• Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness
• Demonstrates lifeguard skills per YMCA standards

Work Environment & Physical Demands

• Must meet physical demands required of a lifeguard.
• Hear distress signals in the aquatic environment.
• Remain alert without lapses of consciousness.
• Observe all sections of assigned zone.
