Job summary

The Harris Central Appraisal District seeks an entry-level attorney to represent the district in civil litigation before State District Courts and in administrative hearings. You will conduct legal research, prepare documents, handle discovery, draft motions, and provide transactional support as needed.

Under supervision, you will manage a caseload of straightforward cases, attend mediations, and stay current with property tax and government law. A J.D.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctorate required.
• Licensed to practice law in Texas.
• 0–5 years of legal experience.
• Governmental agency experience preferred.
• High-volume litigation experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Maintain HCAD litigation support as in-house counsel.
• Develop arguments and represent the district as legal counsel during judicial and administrative proceedings.
• Perform legal research and writing.
• Draft motions, pleadings and legal briefs.
• Propound and respond to written discovery.
• Negotiate settlements and resolve cases cost-effectively.
• Maintain district publications and legal documents.
• Plan, prioritize and meet deadlines.
• Attend mediations and settlement conferences.
• Stay informed on current legislation affecting property tax and local government.
