Job summary

Waites Sensor Technologies Inc. in Huntsville, AL is seeking a Junior Cloud Backend Engineer to help modernize the core API, telemetry ingestion, and backend services for a large-scale industrial IoT platform.

You will work with senior engineers to migrate critical systems from a legacy PHP environment to serverless architectures, while ensuring reliability, scalability, and observability of the platform.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in CS, SE, or related field
• Foundational backend development knowledge from internships, coursework, or projects
• Familiarity with cloud technologies (AWS preferred) and serverless concepts
• Willingness to learn, maintain, and modernize PHP apps
• Understanding of API design, distributed systems, and event-driven architecture
• Exposure to data ingestion pipelines, queues, streams, or serverless tech
• Strong testing mindset (unit/integration/regression)
• Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code and modern CI/CD
• Experience using AI-assisted development tools
• Strong communication and collaboration skills
• Eager to learn and contribute in a fast-paced team

Responsibilities

• Engineer the core backend platform: API tier, telemetry ingestion, and cloud services
• Modernize legacy PHP by migrating services to serverless with safe deployment
• Read, understand, and improve production systems to ensure uninterrupted service
• Design and build reliable APIs, backend services, and data ingestion pipelines
• Rebuild sensor-data ingestion with durable streaming architectures
• Develop characterization tests and replay validation for migration accuracy
• Contribute to IaC, CI/CD, monitoring, and observability
• Participate in on-call rotation and troubleshoot production systems
• Leverage AI-assisted development, testing, and code review
• Collaborate with platform, frontend, AI, and firmware teams
• Carry out additional responsibilities to support business goals
