Job summary

Travaux Inc. in Milwaukee seeks an accounting support specialist to assist the Housing Authority with basic accounting tasks, data entry, reconciliations, and AP/AR support, ensuring GAAP-compliant records.

You will help with month-end closings, HUD reporting, and maintaining general ledger accuracy, with exposure to public housing programs and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

Job description

CLASS SUMMARY

This position supports the financial operations of the Housing Authority by performing basic accounting tasks including data entry, reconciliations, accounts payable and receivable support, and assisting with monthly and year-end closings. This role ensures accurate financial recordkeeping in compliance with HUD regulations, GAAP, and agency policies.

TYPICAL CLASS ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  1. Assists with processing and recording accounts payable and receivable transactions.
  2. Prepares bank deposits and reconciles bank statements.
  3. Maintains and updates general ledger entries under supervision.
  4. Helps prepare monthly financial reports and assist in month‑end closings.
  5. Assists with financial documentation required for HUD reporting and audits.
  6. Reviews invoices for accuracy, approvals, and appropriate coding.
  7. Assists in the reconciliation of housing program accounts (e.g., HCV, Public Housing, LIHTC).
  8. Supports the payroll processing function as needed.
  9. Maintains organized records and financial files.
  10. Responds to inquiries from internal departments and external vendors.
  11. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Associate degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; Bachelor's preferred. 1‑2 years of accounting or bookkeeping experience, preferably in public or nonprofit sector.

  • Accounting principles and financial reporting.
  • Methods of analyzing and preparing financial documents.
SKILLS
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Yardi, or similar).

  • Excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Familiarity with HUD accounting requirements and public housing operations is a plus.
  • Utilizing communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, and others sufficient to exchange or convey information.
