Job summary

Sylvania invites applications for a JRMS Debate Club advisor for the 2026-2027 school year. One position will meet before or after school to guide topic generation and mentor students in basic debating skills.

The advisor will supervise students, ensure safe dismissal, and coordinate with high school mentors to support juniors. The role offers a modest stipend and fosters critical thinking for 7th and 8th graders.

Qualifications

• CT Certified Teacher qualification required.
• Interview may be necessary.

Responsibilities:

• Meet before or after school to facilitate generation of topics and monitor debates.
• Teach students basic debating skills.
• Advisor may not leave until all participants have been picked up by parent/guardian.
• The Debate Club is open to 7th and 8th graders. It is an opportunity for students to discuss current events and hot topics in debate format. Students generate the list of potential topics. The members are divided into two teams. One team supports the topic and the other opposes. Students are taught how to discuss the issue using research and reasoning. Members of the high school Debate Team help mentor and guide the club participants. A great opportunity for the students to examine issues in a safe setting.
• One time meeting for the purpose of reflection on club activities will be schedule

Time Requirement:

Minimum of twenty 1-hour sessions

Stipend:

$1,104

½ paid in first paycheck in December, ½ paid in first paycheck in June
