JOURNEYMAN MILLWRIGHT

Division/Location: Fiber Cement Products Division – White City, Oregon (BWC)
Reports To: Maintenance Manager – James Martin
Position Title: Journeyman Millwright

Hourly Wage: $35.00 per hour
Night Shift Differential: Additional $1.20 per hour
Night Shift Schedule: 5:00 PM – 5:30 AM | Thursday to Thursday | 8 Days On / 6 Days Off

POSITION SUMMARY

The Journeyman Millwright is responsible for performing mechanical maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, installation, and fabrication necessary to support safe and reliable plant operations. This position maintains production and facility equipment, diagnoses mechanical issues, completes repairs in a safe and timely manner, and assists with preventative maintenance and equipment reliability.

The Journeyman Millwright must be able to work independently and as part of a team and must be willing to work various shifts, overtime, weekends, nights, holidays, shutdowns, etc. as operational needs require.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Troubleshoot, repair, install, and maintain plant machinery and mechanical equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
  • Perform welding and fabrication using gas, stick, TIG, and MIG processes on materials including cast iron, stainless steel, aluminum, and carbon steel.
  • Perform hard-facing and air-arc gouging as required.
  • Install, align, and properly fit bearings, sprockets, shafts, couplings, and related components, including slip-fit, press-fit, and shrink-fit applications.
  • Perform general machine shop work using lathes, milling machines, Climax key cutters, and related equipment.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, sketches, schematics, equipment manuals, and technical specifications.
  • Fabricate parts and equipment from blueprints, sketches, measurements, or verbal instructions.
  • Complete assigned projects from initial blueprint or concept through fabrication, installation, testing, and equipment startup.
  • Inspect equipment and identify conditions that may cause equipment failure, production interruptions, or safety concerns.
  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance to improve equipment reliability and minimize downtime.
  • Properly use, maintain, and account for tools, replacement parts, and maintenance inventory.
  • Follow all company safety procedures, including lockout/tagout, PPE requirements, and safe work practices.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Provide technical guidance and direction to helpers and Millwright apprentices when assigned.
  • Work collaboratively with Maintenance, Production, Engineering, and other departments.
  • Perform additional maintenance-related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Successful completion of a recognized four-year Millwright apprenticeship program.
  • Must possess a current State of Oregon Journeyman Millwright card.
  • Industrial mechanical maintenance experience in a manufacturing or heavy-industrial environment.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills involving mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
  • Proficiency in industrial welding and fabrication.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, schematics, and technical documentation.
  • Knowledge of bearings, sprockets, gearboxes, pumps, motors, conveyors, belt drives, piping systems, and related industrial equipment.
  • General machine shop experience using lathes, milling machines, and related equipment.
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, precision measuring instruments, welding equipment, and other Millwright tools.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize assignments, and complete repairs safely and efficiently.
  • Ability to provide direction to helpers and apprentices.
  • Must be willing and able to work overtime and various schedules, including nights, weekends, holidays, shutdowns, and emergency call-ins.

The Journeyman Millwright may maintain, troubleshoot, repair, or install equipment including:

  • Slurry vats, refiners, forming rolls, and autoclave carts
  • 60,000 PSI Ingersoll Rand water-jet intensifier systems
  • Diaphragm, centrifugal, peristaltic, metering, sump, vacuum, water extraction, and progressive cavity pumps
  • Sewer lift stations and submersible grinder pumps
  • Hydraulic power units and piston, vane, and gear pumps
  • Demco, Larox, Saunders, and related industrial valves
  • Shaft-mounted speed reducers and gearboxes
  • V-belt, HTD, Eagle drive, and other belt-drive systems
  • Belt conveyors and electric motors
  • Coater ovens and Maxon burner systems
  • Babcock & Wilcox boiler systems
  • Baghouse and dust collection systems
  • Stainless-steel piping systems
  • Rotary screw air compressors
  • US Filter equipment and related processing systems
  • Other production, utility, and facility equipment as assigned
SAFETY & WORK EXPECTATIONS

Safety is an essential responsibility of this position. The Journeyman Millwright must follow all company safety policies and procedures, properly utilize lockout/tagout and energy-control practices, wear required PPE, identify and communicate unsafe conditions, and perform all work in a manner that protects employees, equipment, property, and the environment.

This position supports an operating manufacturing facility and requires flexibility to respond to equipment failures and production needs. Employees must be able to work assigned shifts and overtime as necessary to support plant operations.

MINIMUM TRADE REQUIREMENT

Applicants must have completed a four-year Millwright apprenticeship and possess a current State of Oregon Journeyman Millwright card.
