Job summary

City of Chicago, Department of Transportation, Division of In-House Construction, seeks a Journey-Level Bridge and Structural Iron Worker to install, repair, and maintain steel structures on city bridges, viaducts, and buildings. Starting salary is $64.19 per hour, with typical Monday–Friday 7:30 am–3:30 pm duties.

Requires completion of a US DOL-registered ironwork apprenticeship and journeyman status, plus relevant experience and a valid IL driver's license; open to the public and

Qualifications

• Successful completion of a US Department of Labor registered structural ironwork apprenticeship training program and journeyman status.
• Completion of an industry or company-sponsored apprenticeship in structural ironwork, plus two years of journey-level work experience.
• Five years of experience as a Bricklayer.

Responsibilities

• Reads blueprints, specifications, and work orders to assess work required.
• Cuts metal units with hacksaws, burning torches, or plasma cutters to install or repair steel structures.
• Ensures supplies of tools, equipment, and materials are at the work site.
• Operates cranes or derricks to hoist steel into place and checks alignment.
• Repairs and maintains ironwork by welding and riveting as required.
• Installs reinforcing iron into concrete and cleans up after work.
