Salary Range: $60,000.00 To $62,500.00 Annually

Job Summary

The Writer/Reporter/Editor will be responsible for researching and writing news articles and features that reflect our community ensuring accuracy, quality and meeting deadlines. The incumbent will also help select wire service pieces for the Jewish Press (hard copy and online versions); work with local Jewish agencies and synagogues to generate content from them as well as edit their submissions and those of other contributors; and help with the layout of the paper.

Essential Job Functions

• Research, report and edit local news stories, events, and issues pertaining to the Jewish community.
• Conduct interviews with community members, officials, and experts.
• Write clear, engaging articles that adhere to journalistic standards and style.
• Assist with editing and layout of paper.
• Collaborate with the editorial team to brainstorm and develop story ideas.
• Attend community meetings, events, and other relevant gatherings.
• Edit and proofread content for accuracy and clarity.
• Stay informed about local issues, trends, and community needs.
• Find compelling wire service content for thepaper.

Position Requirements

• Attend staff meetings.
• Attend JCC & Federation events and other community events (some evenings and weekends).

• Skills necessary: research, knowledge of Microsoft Office and Internet, database usage experience, responsible, able to effectively communicate with JCCs & Federation constituents, knowledge of utilizing office equipment, superior organizational skills.
• Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
• Years of experience: At least 5 years in journalism
• Understanding of Jewish culture and traditions and geo-political dynamics related to Israel
• Strong writing, editing, proofreading and research skills.
• Ability to meet deadlines in a fast-pacedenvironment.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Familiarity with local issues and the community.
• Experience with digital media and social networking platforms is aplus.

Physical Requirements

• Lifting, pushing and pulling up to 10 pounds using proper body mechanics and/or available equipment as physically required—including but not limited to moving supplies and office furniture etc.
• Physical stamina – must be able to bend, kneel, and squat as required to maintain donor files and records, etc.
• Must be able to sit at a desk in an office environment at least 80% of the work shift. Ability to walk and standing intermittently for the remaining 20% of the assigned work day.
• Work is mainly performed in a weather controlled, air conditioned/heated facility. Facility is well lit and has minimal obstacles.
• Position uses typical office environment apparatus including computer, printer, fax machine and copier.
