Job summary

American University Washington College of Law seeks an Associate Director of Academic Advising to lead the institution’s JD advising efforts from matriculation through graduation.

The role focuses on conceptualizing and organizing all academic advising activities, coordinating with the Registrar, Student Affairs, Career Development, Financial Aid, and other offices to ensure targeted, strategic advising for students and robust information about services.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the law school expert on academic advising for JD students. Conceptualize, develop, structure, organize, and monitor the academic advising activities of the law school, including ensuring that students are informed about the law school’s academic and student services.
• Develop comprehensive understanding of all administrative and substantive student resources and be able to convey them to all constituencies. Draft and update graduation requirement guides for student use.
• Design, plan, schedule, and lead mandatory first year supplemental advising sessions (Compass). Lead all aspects of the Compass program, collaborating with other student-facing offices.
• Support the overall mission of the Office of Academic Excellence by providing limited strategic counseling for students to improve academic skills and achievement both in law school and on the bar exam.
• Develop a comprehensive understanding of the experience of JD students at WCL and implement services that support students’ academic experience and satisfaction with law school.
