Job summary

The Charles Schwab Corporation in Jersey City, NJ seeks a Senior Specialist in Software Development and Engineering to develop and maintain the thinkorswim Alerts platform. You will collaborate with a team of engineers on a market-leading trading platform, contribute to design, debugging, and API development, and interact with Enterprise Architecture and Infrastructure teams.

This on-site role emphasizes rapid resolution of issues and cross-team productivity.

Qualifications

  • 4+ Years of Java, J2EE (both client and server side) required
  • 4+ Years Experience with OOA/OOD, distributed systems/software, real-time processing, relational database systems, messaging systems required
  • 3+ years of experience working on the thinkorswim Alerts application required
  • Experience working on high-transaction desktop trading systems required
  • Experience with concurrency & multi-threading required
  • Experience with scaling, Java Garbage Collection, and performance tuning required
  • Experience with agile, test-driven development required
  • Experience with Java Swing required
  • Experience with Unix/Linux, Windows required
  • Experience with build, deploy and test automation tools like Ant, Gradle, Maven and TeamCity, JUnit required
  • Demonstrated experience working with core business logic within applications
  • Experience in developing APIs and Frameworks
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent discipline

Responsibilities

  • Performs product design & troubleshooting exercises of moderate to high complexity which require research and analysis
  • Implementing and maintaining application software throughout the full code life-cycle
  • Participate in some system design and specification development, program logic and flow-charting, testing, debugging, and documentation
  • Quick resolution of both production and non-production issues and provides analysis of problems and recommends solutions
  • A key contributor in client/technology interactions in the development of technology solutions
  • Interface with Enterprise Architecture & Infrastructure teams
  • Troubleshooting of complex problems in development and production environments, ensuring timely resolution of issues
  • Co-lead or drive large projects and programs with less oversight than junior developers
  • Working with asynchronous, non-blocking interactions

As a Senior Specialist, Software Development and Engineering, you'll participate in the development and maintenance of Schwab's flagship thinkorswim® application. In this role, you will have the opportunity to work with a team of hardworking engineers, on one of the most sophisticated trading platforms in the world, built on a codebase we are constantly updating with the latest and greatest industry standards. This person will act as a subject matter expert on the Alerts platform and facilitate both cross and intra-team productivity, collaboration and development objective completion.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency in using agentic and AI-assisted coding tools such as GitHub Copilot and Claude Code
  • Experience in leveraging agentic and AI-assisted flows in multiple aspects of SDLC outside of coding
  • Experience in creating prompts, skills and workflows using agentic and AI-assisted tools
  • Certification and training related to topics in finance and trading
