As a Java Developer, you provide guidance on the development and maintenance of the award-winning thinkorswim platforms. You'll work on a team of engineers on one of the most sophisticated trading platforms in the world, built on a codebase constantly updated with the latest industry standards, collaborating with UX/design, business, and technology partners across the enterprise.

1. Develop and maintain the thinkorswim trading platforms — build and enhance features on the thinkorswim Services Gateway using Java/J2EE (client and server side).
2. Engineer high-performance, real-time trading systems — apply concurrency, multi-threading, and distributed/messaging design to support high-transaction desktop trading.
3. Deliver quality through agile, test-driven development — write and maintain tests and use build/deploy automation (Gradle, Maven, TeamCity, JUnit) to ship reliable code.
4. Collaborate across teams and design APIs/frameworks — partner with UX/design, business, and technology partners to develop reusable APIs, frameworks, and core business logic.

  • 2+ years of Java/J2EE development (client and server side), including hands-on work with the Spring Framework and Java Swing
  • 2+ years designing and building distributed, real-time systems involving OOA/OOD, relational databases, and messaging systems
  • Demonstrated experience developing high-transaction, low-latency desktop trading (or comparable financial) systems, including hands-on concurrency and multi-threading
  • Hands-on experience developing and consuming RESTful APIs and reusable frameworks, with proficiency in JSON/XML
  • Experience with build, deploy, and test automation tooling (Ant, Gradle, Maven, TeamCity, JUnit) within an agile, test-driven environment
  • Working experience with at least one major cloud platform (AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure) and Unix/Linux and Windows environments
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or an equivalent technical discipline (or equivalent demonstrable experience)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (Master's) in Computer Science or a related field
  • Certification in Agile methodologies, such as Professional Scrum Developer (PSD)
  • Prior experience developing on the thinkorswim Services Gateway platform or other proprietary trading systems
  • Familiarity with financial markets, brokerage, or trading domain concepts (equities, options, order routing, market data)
  • Experience with JVM performance tuning, profiling, and garbage-collection optimization
  • Experience with event-driven or streaming architectures and messaging systems (e.g., Kafka)
  • Hands-on experience with containerization and orchestration technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code tooling (e.g., Terraform)
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate with all types of stakeholders, both technical and business, peers, and leaders
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and contribute to multiple projects simultaneously
  • Strong problem-solving, critical-thinking, and the ability to quickly grasp complex concepts and learn new technologies
