Job summary

The Salvation Army in Chicago is seeking a dependable Janitorial & Facilities team member to keep the Center for Social Justice + City Mission clean, safe, and ready to serve. You will support events, deliveries, and facility needs while maintaining a strong attention to detail.

Minimum 1 year janitorial experience and a High School diploma are required. A valid driver’s license is needed for local driving within the Chicago metro area. Equal opportunity employer.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent and must be able to obtain/maintain a clear MVR record for driving Salvation Army vehicles.
• Minimum of 1 year janitorial experience.
• Ability to speak, write, and understand English sufficiently for effective communication with leadership and facilities personnel.
• Self-motivated and able to work under minimal supervision with great attention to detail.

Responsibilities

• Report maintenance issues to the CSJ+CM Director and Officer-in-Charge.
• Address light maintenance needs (hanging pictures, replacing bulbs, etc.).
• Assist with event setup and teardown of furniture and displays.
• Move furniture, boxes, and other heavy equipment.
• Restock supplies and spot-clean the facility including kitchen and bathrooms.
• Perform routine cleaning of windows (interior/exterior).
• Maintain janitor closet and keep it organized.
• Oversee exterior of property; remove debris and dispose of items in dumpster.
• Drive Salvation Army vehicle to pick up supplies and deliver in Chicago metro area.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Compensation Range: $21.02 to $23.36/hourly

Job Objective

The objective of this position is to provide janitorial support of the Center for Social Justice + City Mission (CSJ+CM), facility.

Essential Job Functions

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Certificates

High School diploma or equivalent and must be able to obtain/maintain a clear MVR record for driving Salvation Army vehicles.

Experience

Minimum of 1‑year of janitorial experience

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

• Proper use of small hand tools, flooring & carpet cleaning equipment.
• Ability to speak, write, and understand English in a manner sufficient for effective communication with leadership and facilities personnel.
• Self‑motivated, able to work under minimal supervision with great attention to detail.

OR - Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Supervisory Responsibility

None

Travel

• Chicago Metropolitan Area up to 2 times per month.
• Valid driver’s license required.

Physical Requirements

• Must be able to lift up to and including 50 pounds multiple times per week.
• Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
• Must be able to bend, squat, climb stairs and ladders, reach above shoulder level, crouch, push and pull.
• Must have visual acuity.

Working Conditions

• Exposure to dirt, dust, chemicals, and solvents.
• Work is performed in a typical office or residential environment.
