Job Summary
It is the intent of the basic job requirements, duties, and responsibilities that any building be kept neat and clean at all times. The pay rate is $21.75 per hour.
Essential Functions
- Sweeps, vacuums, mops, scrubs, waxes and polishes floors using industrial vacuum cleaners and scrubbing and buffing machines.
- Sometimes using ladders, dusts and washes walls, cleans ceilings and dusts and polishes light fixtures.
- Washes and replaces blinds.
- Moves cabinets, boxes, furniture, crates and equipment to clean areas.
- May remove stains from such surfaces as rugs, drapes, walls, and floors using chemicals and cleaning solutions.
- May also sweep walks, rake leaves, cut grass, remove snow or perform other incidental seasonal tasks.
- Empty waste baskets and replace liners in carpeted areas.
- Dust/clean tops of office furniture.
- Vacuum carpeting.
- Spot clean soiled areas on carpets as needed.
- Clean glass on lobby door.
- Sweep and mop tile areas.
- Lunchroom/Break Areas: empty waste baskets and replace liners as needed; wipe/clean all table tops and chairs; wipe/clean vending machines and appliances; clean sink and counter areas; sweep and mop tile floors.
- Conference Rooms and Office Spaces: replace chair socks as needed; place cushions; straighten items on I.T. table; remove the fruit and vegetable baskets from the counter; wipe down printer stations; place loose items back in designated areas; make fresh coffee for cafes as needed; replace missing whiteboard markers and erasers; tidy loose items on tables; hide cords neatly; gather random items such as left belongings; return lost items to reception lost and found; toss beverages; bring dishes to wash; ref ound chairs; fluff pillows; arrange neatly in common areas; return random items to reception; note items that are low in stock; tidy reception and bike area; unfold ping pong table and return to designated area.
- Kitchen Areas: organize shelves in the dishwasher room; inventory and restock candy, condiments and kegs; if a keg or appliance is broken, place an “Out of Order” sign taped to it; make fresh coffee as needed; on Wednesdays, place plates or bowls on tables for “Wednesday snack”; empty bottle caps from freezer door openers; remove the coffee station from the counter; put them into the dish room until after caterers leave; place fruit and vegetable baskets in the area between utensil stations; fill all utensil stations to capacity; keep clean utensils readily available; stack plates and bowls for use.
- Restrooms: empty waste baskets and replace liners as needed; clean and sanitize toilets, basins, and urinals; sweep and mop floors with disinfectant; spot clean walls, partitions and doors; refill all restroom dispensers as needed.
- Non‑Carpeted Areas: empty waste baskets and replace liners as needed; sweet and spot mop tile floors; complete damp mop tile floors; dust/clean cleared desks and surfaces of tables; clean overhead vents; dust blinds; polish wood furniture; dust high partitions and ledges; clean interior partition glass.
- Miscellaneous: keep janitor’s closet neat and orderly; equipment (such as vacuums) must be properly maintained at all times.
Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge of basic janitorial duties and responsibilities.
- Must have good listening and verbal communication skills; some positions require the ability to speak/understand English.
- Must maintain a neat appearance; a uniform is required at some worksites.
- Must attend periodic training and safety meetings.
- Must understand and anticipate the needs of the clients.
- Must be punctual.
Education and Work Experience
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent preferred.
- 6 months of experience in commercial facilities and building janitorial work desired.
Work Environment
- Small‑to‑large office environment.
- Safety glasses required while performing certain tasks.
- Fast paced work environment.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
- Exposed to a combination of normal office type environments and shop environments.
- Regularly exposed to dust, odors, oil, fumes, cleaning products and noise.
Physical Demands
- Repetitive movements: stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear.
- Ability to stand, walk, and sit for long periods of time.
- May occasionally lift and/or move a minimum of 40 pounds of office and facilities equipment, cleaning products, tools, and ladders and trash and the ability to safely use equipment provided.
- Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
