Job summary

The City of Laguna Beach invites applications for a Part-Time Police Cadet. Under the supervision of Laguna Beach Police Department personnel, cadets learn to perform various law enforcement duties across divisions including Field Services, Support/Investigative Services, and Professional Services.

Cadets work 16 to 32 hours per week and must be available for holidays, weekends and evenings. The position may require working more hours during special events.

Qualifications

  • The candidate must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school graduation and coursework in criminal justice or related fields are desirable.
  • Valid California driver’s license with acceptable driving record required.
  • Background check, polygraph, fingerprint check, and medical/drug screening are required.

Responsibilities

  • Interact with the public by phone and in person in Records duties.
  • Assist with clerical tasks, data entry, and filing.
  • Enter and retrieve confidential data from computer databases.
  • Fingerprint applicants and assist with vehicle cleaning.
  • Perform parking enforcement and aid with traffic control during events.
  • Support the Investigation Division and social media activities.

Job description

Join the City of Laguna Beach as a Part-Time Police Cadet!

Under the supervision of Laguna Beach Police Department personnel, the Police Cadet will learn to perform various law enforcement duties. Assignments may be made within any division of the Police Department, including Field Services, Support/Investigative Services, and Professional Services.

The Schedule:

Candidates must be able to work a varied schedule including holidays, weekends, and evenings from April through September. Cadets work approximately 16 to 32 hours per week year-round; however, there may be special occasions where incumbents are asked to work more hours.

What You'll Do
Records:
  • Interacting with the public on the phone and in person.
  • Assist with clerical duties such as filing paperwork and data entry.
  • Entering and retrieving confidential data from computer databases.
  • Fingerprinting of applicants.
  • Assist with vehicle cleaning.
Field Services:
  • Perform parking enforcement.
  • Cite and impound vehicles.
  • Assist with traffic control during special events, peak traffic conditions, and weekends and holidays.
  • Assist with fire and flood watch patrols during windy or inclement weather.
Investigations:
  • Assisting with the transportation and tracking of evidence.
  • Assisting with social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram.
  • Taking photographs and creating flyers and notices.
  • Provide support to the Investigation Division.

Any combination of education and experience demonstrating the ability to effectively and successfully perform the duties of the position is considered qualifying. A typical combination is as follows:

  • *Must be at least 18 years of age.
Education:

Graduation from high school or the equivalent. Related college level coursework in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or similar; and experience in the field performing traffic control is highly desirable.

Experience:

One year of public contact work experience, preferably in a law enforcement agency.

License/Certificate Requirements:

Due to the performance of field duties, which requires the operation of a personal or City vehicle, a valid California Driver's license and an acceptable driving record are required.

Application/Selection Process

Applications will be screened carefully and selected candidates will be invited to undergo a department interview. The appointed hiring authority will further review the job-related qualifications of those deemed eligible for hire before making selection decisions.

Pre-Placement Process

A candidate selected for this position must successfully complete a thorough police background check with the Laguna Beach Police Department, a polygraph test, and a fingerprint check with the State Department of Justice. Successful completion of a pre-placement medical exam including pre-employment drug testing is also required.
