The Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs seeks a Health Information Associate to maintain and process residents’ medical records in accordance with HIPAA and confidentiality standards.

You will collect, organize, and release information as needed, supporting admissions, discharges, and information requests from healthcare providers and internal departments.

Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to two years of college and one year of health related office experience, or completion of highschool and three years of healthrelated office experience.
  • Preferred qualifications include at least one year of experience utilizing knowledge of the principles and practices of health information records maintenance and working knowledge of confidentiality and release considerations.
  • Experience with HIPAA terminology and health information management practices is beneficial.

Position Overview:

This role maintains, organizes, and processes residents’ medical records and health information. The role ensures records are accurate, complete, timely, and handled in accordance with HIPAA and confidentiality requirements. Responsibilities include processing admissions, discharges, and releases of information while responding to medical record requests from healthcare providers and internal departments. Essential Functions:
  • Under general supervision, performs a varietyof paraprofessional healthinformation functions.
  • Assists in planning, organizing and maintainingpatient medical informationreceived from avariety of healthcarefacilities (e.g. local health providers, VA medical centers, V.A. hospitals, etc.) and processessaid information throughestablished procedures.
  • Collects and recordsinformation associatedwith residents uponadmission, death ordischarge.
  • Answers the telephoneand handles requestfor medical informationfrom other departmentswhich requires theknowledge of medical, psychological, psychiatricand anatomical terminology.
  • Implements the Authorizationof Release Information, requiring signatures andforwarding on toappropriate parties whichrequires the knowledgeof federal andstate statutes regardingconfidentiality, HIPAA,and release ofinformation.
  • Reviews the healthinformation record foraccuracy, timeliness andcompleteness and tointerpret health informationrecords.
  • Performs other dutiesas required orassigned which arereasonably within thescope of theduties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Requires knowledge, skilland mental developmentequivalent to twoyears of collegeand one yearof health relatedoffice experience, orcompletion of highschool and threeyears of healthrelated office experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • It is a preference of this position that you possess at least one (1) year of experience utilizing knowledge of the principles and practices of health information records maintenance.
  • It is a preference of this position that you possess working knowledge of departmental codes and other rules and regulations related to health information records.
  • It is a preference of this position that you possess working knowledge of the standards of the American Health Information Management Systems pertaining to medical records.
  • It is a preference of this position that you possess working knowledge of medical, psychological, and psychiatric terminology, as well as federal and state statutes regarding confidentiality and release of information.
  • It is a preference of this position that you possess working knowledge of medical jurisprudence and state laws governing the use of health information records in court actions.
