AtkinsRéalis in Raleigh, NC is seeking an ITS/Traffic Engineering Intern to join our office. You will design plans for ITS/Traffic projects, organize investigations, and prepare concise technical reports under supervision.

Responsibilities include evaluating design approaches, preparing cost estimates, and coordinating with disciplines. This internship offers exposure to industry best practices and mentorship as part of Explore, AtkinsRéalis' intern development program.

Qualifications

• Must have completed 60 hours towards a civil engineering degree from an ABET accredited program by the start of the internship (Summer 2027).
• Education path toward Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a related technical field is acceptable with no required prior experience.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop plans and drawings related to ITS and Traffic design, including traffic signal design and fiber optic routing.
• Organize ITS and Traffic investigations, planning, and analysis with defined scope.
• Prepare straightforward technical reports under supervision.
• Research feasibility of design approaches, site conditions, regulations, and emerging technologies.
• Contribute to specifications and permit applications; prepare man-hour, cost, and material estimates.
• Support quality control checks and coordinate with other disciplines; participate in field observations when needed.

Overview

AtkinsRéalis is seeking an ITS/Traffic Engineering Intern to join our Raleigh, NC office.

Your Role

• Design and develop plans and drawings, which may include the development of preliminary layout and/or final drawings related to ITS and Traffic design. Specifically, our work includes traffic signal design, fiber optic communications cable routing and splicing, utility coordination, signing and striping, traffic safety studies, and more.


• Organize and conduct ITS and Traffic engineering investigations, planning, and analysis which have a well-defined scope.


• Outline and prepare relatively straightforward technical reports of sections of more complex reports, working under the periodic review of a more experienced professional.


• Research feasibility of alternative design approaches, site conditions, regulatory agency specifications, industry best practices, state of the practices, and emerging technologies.


• Contributes to the development of specifications and permit applications and writes miscellaneous reports. Prepares preliminary man-hour, cost and material quantity estimates.


• Participates in quality control checks, maintaining quality standards in all work produced, checking computations, and/or reviewing reports, designs, and drawings developed by others.


• Coordinate with other disciplines as required. Perform field observations of construction where appropriate.


• Perform such other duties as the supervisor may from time to time deem necessary.

About You

• EXPERIENCE: Must have completed 60 hours towards a civil engineering degree from an ABET accredited program by the start of the internship (Summer 2027).


• EDUCATION: No experience is generally required if accepted into an Associate's or Bachelor's degree program in a related technical field.


• SPECIAL SKILLS: Basic computer skills required to enter data into spreadsheets or databases Math skills to perform simple calculations; willingness to learn.


• Proficiency in Microsoft Office.


• Experience with AutoCAD or MicroStation (preferred).

Additional Information

Expected compensation range is between $ 25 - $ 31 hourly depending on skills, experience, and geographical location.
